The official launch of BabouConnect Publishing brought together approximately 60 community members for an afternoon centered on books, literacy, children, culture, identity, and community engagement.
The event was more than a publishing launch. It introduced a different kind of community gathering—one where people could come together not only to celebrate, but also to discuss the needs, hopes, and future of their community.
A highlight of the event was a panel discussion featuring community members who shared their perspectives on learning at home, literacy and education, identity, civic engagement, and the importance of preparing the next generation.
The community responded enthusiastically to the discussion. Many appreciated having a space where these issues could be openly discussed and where elders, parents, young people, and children could all see themselves as part of the conversation.
That was precisely the intention behind the launch.
For founder Mahamadou S. Toure, the decision to launch BabouConnect Publishing through a community-centered event was deliberate. Rather than organizing a traditional business launch focused only on the publisher and its books, he wanted the occasion to reflect the broader purpose behind the initiative.
“If we are going to gather as a community, we should also create opportunities to learn, discuss, encourage one another, and think about what we want for our children and our future.”
The panelists embraced that purpose and encouraged community members to support local authors and make reading part of family life. They emphasized that when one member of the community creates something meaningful, the benefit can extend to the entire community.
The event also included a children’s reading session, giving young participants an opportunity to stand before the community and read from books. Children also showcased their creativity and skills, adding another important dimension to the gathering.
The launch reflected the growing role of books and publishing in the community. BabouConnect Publishing has developed titles for children and adults addressing subjects including education, faith, culture, immigration, identity, family, and personal experiences.
One particularly meaningful part of the event was the recognition of the legacy of Toure’s late father, El Hadj Saad Oumar Touré, whose commitment to education, faith, and community service continues to influence his son’s work.
Toure has also authored a book documenting his father’s life and legacy. Several of his books have now been catalogued by the Columbus Metropolitan Library, an achievement he sees as an important example of how immigrant voices and community stories can become part of broader public institutions.
The event also brought together family members and community supporters from different places, including visitors who traveled from outside Ohio to participate.
The presence of elders alongside young people and children reinforced one of the central messages of the gathering: knowledge and community responsibility must be passed from one generation to the next.
BabouConnect Publishing was born in the United States, but its vision is connected to a much broader cultural heritage. As a Malian immigrant, Toure hopes to continue building bridges between the United States and West Africa through books, literacy, culture, and community engagement.
The launch demonstrated that a publishing initiative can be more than the production of books. It can also become a platform for conversation, a space for children, a way to preserve community knowledge, and an opportunity to encourage people to become more engaged in the places where they live.
