Running the Columbus Marathon this weekend is a dream for many people, like a local Central Ohio resident, Juan Simo, a Venezuelan-American, because it is one of the largest and most prestigious marathons in the United States.
The sense of accomplishment and pride that comes from completing a marathon can be incredibly inspiring. Seeing others succeed and push themselves like Juan to reach their goals can be a great source of motivation for those looking to take on the challenge of running a marathon this weekend.
How have you overcome the challenges and persevered when preparing for the marathon?
When I prepare, I stay focused and disciplined. I do my best to do every workout as well as possible.
Is the marathon itself worth it, and why?
Running a Marathon is worth it. There’s no better satisfaction than overcoming your limitations; finishing a race reminds you that you can do whatever you set yourself or your mind out to do.
Depending on whether you are a seasoned runner or a beginner, why is it best to decide when to get a coach?
It would help if you get a coach when you realize your goals got more prominent and you need a process and structure in your training.
Why is it best to run as a couple or with a group of friends, and how can that help build long-lasting relationships?
It is better because you are running with people with the same goals and passion for the sport. Also, they push you to get better and have a support system of friends that will last forever.
Perseverance after sustaining an injury:
I suffered a knee injury and had to undergo surgery to repair it. As an athlete, it was a significant obstacle for me to overcome. Initially, the surgery seemed too expensive, but I knew it was necessary and went ahead with it. Thankfully, I have fully recovered and can return to doing what I love most – running.
Competing with yourself:
Ahead of the race, setting personal goals that motivate you to push yourself to the limits is essential. Remember that when running a marathon, you don’t compete with others but with yourself. Therefore, setting achievable yet challenging goals to maximize your performance is crucial.
In what ways has competing with the best in the world inspired you to inspire others to conquer their fear?
Running in the Columbus Marathon this weekend will be an excellent opportunity to challenge myself and set an example for others. I hope to inspire others to lead healthier and more active lifestyles by running and completing the marathon. It will be a fantastic experience that will stay with me.
Which Columbus marathon have you run previously?
I have run the Columbus Marathon 3 times in 2019, 2021, and 2022, with 2022 being my best race.
What are your weekly training routines leading toward the marathon weekend?
My weekly routine consists of running 50 miles per week. I run five miles twice a week for recovery, two-speed workouts, and one long run. I maintain this schedule for four months leading up to the race.
