The City of Columbus has been honored with the City Cultural Diversity Award from the National League of Cities (NLC) for its outstanding efforts in promoting cultural diversity and inclusivity.

The award recognizes cities that have demonstrated a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all residents, increasing participation in local government, and fostering ongoing cultural diversity efforts.

The City of Columbus was recognized for its innovative Columbus Housing Strategy, which addresses the critical issue of affordable housing while promoting diversity and inclusivity.

The strategy includes a comprehensive update of the city’s zoning code, the creation of a citywide community reinvestment area, and the passage of a “Housing For All” legislative package.

The Housing For All package led by Councilmember Shayla Favor includes several pieces of legislation that were passed in 2023:

• Legal Representation in Eviction Court
• Pathways to Homeownership
• Third-Party Payments
• Pay to Stay
• Owner/Occupied Initiative
• Retaliatory Action

“The City of Columbus is proud to receive this prestigious award from the National League of Cities,” said Councilmember Shayla Favor, chair of the Housing, Homelessness, and Building committee.

“The Columbus Housing Strategy and the Housing for All package are a testament to our commitment to promoting cultural diversity and inclusivity in our community. But our work is not done. Council is diligently working to complete its 18-month housing initiative plan, which includes a vacancy registry, foreclosure registry, and wholesaler regulation.”

The award highlights the City of Columbus’ efforts to engage residents from all backgrounds in developing and implementing its housing initiatives. Through robust community engagement campaigns, Council has led and prioritized housing policies that are inclusive and equitable for all residents, regardless of socioeconomic status.
