Governor DeWine opens Ohio State Fair

Posted by: New Americans Magazine , July 24, 2024

By Okon Ekpenyong

The 2024 Ohio State Fair kicked off on Wednesday, July 24, and will run until Sunday, August 4. Governor DeWine and Lieutenant Governor Husted attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and it also marked the beginning of a new era under Executive Director Adam Heffron.

Governor DeWine and First Lady Fran DeWine visited the science building, highlighting exhibits like Intel, COSI, Battelle, and NASA, showcasing Ohio’s technological advancements, innovation, and education. This effort underscores the state’s commitment to making the fair an all-around experience for visitors of all ages.

“One particularly exciting thing about this year’s State Fair is that we’re on the path toward progress. We have several construction projects underway that will enhance the fairgrounds for the future, both for the fair and the events held here the other 353 days a year,” explained Governor DeWine.

Afterward, Governor DeWine embarked on a stroll along the main street of the fairgrounds, taking in the sights and sounds of the vibrant atmosphere. During his walk, the Governor made a sweet stop at a cookie vendor, indulging in one of their freshly baked treats and exchanging warm smiles with fairgoers. He also visited the iconic Schmidt’s German Village booth, where he savored one of their renowned desserts and conversed with the manager’s son.

During these impromptu moments, Governor DeWine had the chance to connect with the fairgoers, showcasing his approachable and down-to-earth nature. As he mingled with fairgoers and vendors, he demonstrated his commitment to supporting local businesses and enjoying the simple pleasures of the Ohio State Fair.

Governor DeWine and Lieutenant Governor Husted continue to enhance the state fair tradition, aiming to increase attendance, drive economic growth, and provide an educational experience beyond entertainment. The fair serves as a platform for showcasing Ohio’s achievements, progress, and culture, attracting thousands of visitors, generating significant revenue, and creating job opportunities.

The Ohio State Fair is more than a vibrant two-week celebration for Ohioans, visitors, and the New Americans. It’s a gateway to experiencing their new home’s diverse culture and traditions. Walking through the gates, they’ll discover a world of delicious food, exciting rides, and entertainment showcasing Ohio’s best.

Despite some attractions being relocated due to construction, longtime fair favorites remain, including the famous butter cow and calf sculptures, the iconic SkyGlider ride, and Smokey Bear in the Natural Resources Park. New exhibits and attractions, such as the Nerveless Nocks Sway Pole Show and the Wheels of Agriculture Game Show, have been added, ensuring a fun and memorable experience.

“The fair is a place for fun and entertainment and a platform for new Americans to connect with various communities in Ohio. With a diverse range of Ohio’s agricultural favorites, exhibits, and performances, attendees can enjoy the flavors and embrace Ohio’s cultural heritage. The fair also offers a unique opportunity to connect with others with similar backgrounds and experiences, fostering a strong sense of belonging and community.”

This year’s fair features educational opportunities to learn about Ohio’s history and agriculture, helping new Americans better understand and appreciate their new home. The fair also expands for growth and development, with approximately $200 million allocated for infrastructure improvements from the recent capital budget.

“Our state fair is truly an opportunity to highlight what makes Ohio great,” said Lt. Governor Husted. He also noted that showcasing exhibits across the state brings Ohioans together to celebrate agriculture, innovation, business, natural resources, food, music, art, and more.”

The organizers of the Ohio State Fair are dedicated to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone. Their main goal is to make it easy for longtime residents, visitors, and new Americans to feel at home by fostering a sense of familiarity and comfort. Their unwavering commitment ensures that every visitor is respected and acknowledged regardless of background. The new executive director, Adam Heffron, states that within the next 12 days, our goal is to continue showcasing the legacy of the Ohio State Fair to thousands of Ohioans and visitors, highlighting what makes the Ohio State Fair great.

The Ohio State Fair brings economic benefits and social and cultural significance. It fosters unity, promotes local artists and musicians, and celebrates Ohio’s culture and heritage while also being a source of pride and economic growth. Before attending the fair, note that minors must be accompanied by adults over 21 after 6 pm, and fair security will verify state IDs. Try new food options like pickle lemonade, caramel popcorn ice cream, and cotton candy cream puffs. The Ohio State Fair runs until August 4, offering a unique opportunity for new Americans to connect with their heritage and community.
