With the theme of this year’s World Refugee Day being “Hope Away from Home,” the ETSS Tewahedo Social Services (ETSS) in collaboration with the North YMCA will host a public event on Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the North YMCA, 1640 Sandalwood Place, Columbus (Northland Area), Ohio to celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of refugees in the community.
Featured speakers and performers include Dr. Seleshi, founder and CEO of ETSS; Mayor Bivens of Whitehall, presenting a resolution; Ohio State Representatives Humphrey and Mohamed; Deba Uwadiae of New American Magazine; Dan Beirne of Global Refuge; Abdi Soofe of the City of Columbus; Mihret Adera, Youth Council VP; Ashiqullah Rahmani, ETSS staff; and Durga Dance Group (children), according to Jared Tanner, ETSS Institutional Advancement Specialist
Event Highlights:
• Cultural Performances: Enjoy music, dance, and art from diverse cultures represented by the refugee community.
• Guest Speakers: Hear inspiring stories from refugees who have successfully integrated into the community, along with remarks from local leaders and advocates.
• Resource Fair: Connect with organizations providing essential services such as healthcare, education, employment, and legal aid.
• Family Activities: Fun and educational activities for children and families, including face painting, crafts, and games, food, and refreshments.
World Refugee Day, appointed by the United Nations and observed on June 20th each year, is a global occasion to honor refugees around the world. This year’s theme, “Hope Away from Home,” emphasizes the importance of community and support in helping refugees rebuild their lives.
