On Thursday evening, June 6, 2024 a profound sense of loss and collective sadness descended upon the New American community and the readers of Somali Community Link, both locally and nationally with the departure to the great beyond of Mahdi Taakilo, the founder and publisher of Somali Community Link.
Executive Director of the Somali Community Associations Hassan Omar confirmed the passing of Mahdi Taakilo to New Americans magazine.
“Yes, he is gone,” said Hassan Omar.
Breaking the news on Mahdi Taakilo’s Facebook page, Deeck Omar said “To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. Rest in peace brother Mahdi Taakilo who just passed away. And died in Columbus Ohio. He was a man who had a great job for the community, patience and faith to the family.”
Also, Columbus community leader Kawther Musa said “My dear brother Mahdi Taakilo has left us, leaving behind an unfillable void. He was not only my friend and mentor but also a pillar of our community, whose guidance and wisdom will be sorely missed. His passing feels unreal and it’s hard to come to terms with the fact that he is no longer with us. Mahdi Taakilo.
Abdirizak Diini said “May Allah have mercy on his soul and grant him the highest of Jannah. Brother Mahdi Taakilo will surely be missed.”
Another community leader Burhan Ahmed said “We belong to Allah, and we will return to Him. Mahdi Taakilo is good friend and brother , community leader. May Allah have mercy on him. Our community lost true leader in Columbus, Ohio, were affected by this death. Glory be to Allah, may He open his grave wide for him and grant him a reward in paradise.”
Mahdi Taakilo published the Somali Link for many years in Somali language informing and educating the community of issues and activities in the community and the city of Columbus, Ohio.
As news of his passing spread, a flood of tributes from all corners of the community underscored the profound impact of Taakilo’s work.
It is evident that his presence and contribution were not just valued but deeply cherished. He was more than a publisher; he was a voice for the community, using his platform to draw attention to crucial issues, promote resources, and share the stories of his people.
For many, the news of Taakilo’s passing was a jolt. He was a man who embodied grace and dignity, and his absence will undoubtedly be deeply felt by all those who knew him. However, amid this loss, it is crucial to underscore and honor the profound legacy that he leaves behind.
