The City of Columbus announced a substantial investment of $20.8 million earlier this week to fund a variety of summer programs aimed at supporting the youth, including sports, camps, and city-led initiatives.
More than 75 local organizations have benefited from this funding initiative, with significant allocations going to Community Refugee & Immigration Services and Liberians in Columbus, who received $10,000 and $75,000 respectively.
During the announcement, Mayor Andrew Ginther emphasized the importance of these programs in fostering a “brighter tomorrow” for children across the city.
Moreover, the mayor also took time to retrospect on the days of Covid 19 and how it affected lots of children.
“Our children have been through so much these last few years – coming out of the pandemic and adjusting to a changed society – and it is vital that they see themselves in our city’s future,” he stated.
Additionally, Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin also highlighted that these programs are designed to reach children in every neighborhood, ensuring equitable opportunities for all.
“These initiatives are crucial in helping our youth develop new skills, stay active, and connect with their communities during the summer months,” said Hardin.
The funding allocation was the result of a competitive application process that attracted proposals from 90 community organizations. An interdepartmental review committee, comprising members from both the city administration and council, evaluated these submissions to determine the recipients.
The immigrant community, which represents one of the largest demographic groups in Columbus, expressed gratitude for the city’s inclusive approach.
The Executive Director for the Liberians in Columbus, Mr. Alpha Tongor praised the city for its ongoing support, stating, “we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the City of Columbus Department of Parks and Recreation for approving our grant funding request. This support means a great deal to us and will have a profound impact on the youth in our community. We are truly honored to receive this funding, which will enable us to continue our mission of providing meaningful educational and enrichment opportunities to our community youth during the summer break.”
The city of Columbus continues to recognize and empower our diverse communities, which is essential for the growth and development of our city as a whole. We are committed to utilizing these funds thoughtfully, developing programs that will directly benefit the children and youth within our community.”
This financial boost will enable organizations like the Community Refugee & Immigration Services and Liberians in Columbus to offer enriched summer activities that cater to the needs of children from diverse backgrounds, providing them with essential developmental opportunities during the crucial summer months.
