Meredith Lawson-Rowe has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first African American woman to secure the Democratic nomination for Ohio’s 5th House District. With no Republican candidate in the November general election, she will contest unopposed for the position.
Ms. Lawson-Rowe’s journey to this point has been shaped by her family’s support, faith in God, unwavering commitment to women’s rights and community advocacy, and determination to break generational curses. Her mother, a pioneer of the women’s and civil rights movement, has significantly influenced her life. Her fearless advocacy and unapologetic style have undoubtedly rubbed off on Meredith, who is known for her colorful eyewear, shoes, and impeccable style.
Before her political career, Ms. Lawson-Rowe worked in the corporate sector for several years. In 2019, she joined Shanette Monley Strickland and Angie Smith Jenkins as one of the first African American women to be elected and serve in the city council’s history. When the then-Council President Smith did not seek re-election, Ms. Lawson-Rowe entered the race, and in 2022, she was re-elected by the voters.
As the City of Reynoldsburg Council President, Ms. Lawson-Rowe has gained valuable experience in local government and community outreach. Her strong canvassing and door-knocking skills have allowed her to connect with residents personally and understand the critical issues that affect their daily lives.
Ms. Lawson-Rowe’s platform prioritizes essential issues such as affordable housing, equitable education, an advanced transportation system, senior healthcare, and economic development. She firmly believes that by working together, positive change can be created and the quality of life for all residents improved.
As a state representative, Ms. Lawson-Rowe plans to continue advocating for women’s rights, civil rights, and social justice. Her primary election victory is a testament to her hard work and dedication; she is ready to take on the challenges ahead.
“I am committed to representing not only the residents of Reynoldsburg but also the wonderful communities of Canal Winchester, Groveport, Columbus, and all the areas within the 5th House District. I will approach this responsibility with the utmost dedication, treating each family as if they were my own neighbors,” she said.
The 5th House District of Ohio includes suburban and rural areas in Reynoldsburg, Groveport, Canal Winchester, and other parts of Columbus. It encompasses portions of Franklin, Licking, and Fairfield counties in Central Ohio. Due to its diverse population, the historically Republican stronghold has had two Democratic representatives in recent years.
Meredith Lawson-Rowe will become the first African American to hold the seat in that district. It is a significant moment in Ohio’s political landscape, bringing hope for a more inclusive and equitable future.
Lawson-Rowe will face challenges in her new role, including navigating a predominantly Republican legislature and representing her constituents’ diverse needs and interests. Her victory represents a shift in the district’s political beliefs and highlights the importance of grassroots campaigning and community engagement in local elections.
Beyond politics, Ms. Lawson-Rowe plans to advocate for programs that empower children to aim higher for themselves and their families. Also, she’s always advocated for promoting small businesses owned by new Americans and minorities and will continue to do so. By prioritizing education and providing resources for personal and professional growth, Ms. Lawson-Rowe aims to break generational cycles of poverty and empower the youth in Ohio’s 5th house district and beyond.
Her unique background and strong leadership skills make her a political trailblazer for women and African Americans. With her eye on the prize and her mother’s legacy as her inspiration, Ms. Lawson-Rowe is ready to make a difference in the lives of her constituents and beyond.
Ms. Lawson-Rowe is also a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and colleague. Despite her busy schedule, she always finds time to volunteer and support the community in breaking generational curses.
