Ohio’s 3rd District has a thriving New American community spanning several neighborhoods. Despite their hard work and determination to create a better future, the community often feels its voices need to be heard in the local political arena. However, Ismail Mohamed, the district state representative who won his second term, said his commitment to improving the quality of life for those he represents is evident in the bills he supports or introduces.
“Thanks to the voters of House District 3 for allowing me to continue serving, and credit to my campaign team, volunteers, elected officials, and everyone who supported me throughout this journey,” said Rep. Mohamed.
Representative Mohamed also quoted Mahatma Gandhi, saying that “the best way to find oneself is by losing oneself in service to others.” Serving others is what pushes him every day.
Mohamed and Representative Munira Abdullahi, who represent the 9th District, are Ohio’s first two Somali-American representatives.
The representative received his undergraduate degree in Political Science and his JD from Ohio State University. Since taking the oath of office on January 1, 2023, Rep Ismail Mohamed has co-sponsored over 20 bills since his election and introduced several bills to address critical issues within the state that the community advocates for.
According to the District Map, much of the District covers North Linden, the Easton Mall area, parts of the University District, Short North, and downtown Columbus.
The New American community is vibrant and diverse, with a rich culture and strong traditions. Many members are first- and second-generation immigrants who bring a mix of Somali, Hispanic, and American customs, for example.
Representative Mohamed wants to continue advocating for policies that will benefit his district and beyond, including helping funds more access to education and employment opportunities. He plans to advocate for these policies through specific strategies, such as partnering with local organizations and creating mentorship programs.
For instance, HB 96 seeks to increase the minimum wage, while HB 247 designates world refugees. HB 353 requires that accident fault information be included in a motor vehicle abstract, while HB 374 examines nonresident drivers with international licenses. Lastly, HB 408 mandates that public schools provide meals and related services to their students.
Despite his success, the Rep has faced opposition within his community, including his two challengers, Diini & Trabold, in this year’s Primary.
Abdirizak Diini, a newcomer to the political scene, gained significant support from the Somali-American community in the 3rd District.
“I am running to advocate for immigrant rights, addressing issues such as affordable housing, education, the opioid crises that is destroying our community right now, and other unsolved factors,” Diini said.
The community saw him as a solid and passionate voice for their interests, and they believed that he was the best candidate to challenge Rep Mohamed.
According to the results released by the Franklin County Board of Elections, the 31-year-old Columbus Attorney emerged victorious with 55% of the vote, defeating Abdirizak Diini who received 33% of the vote. Meanwhile, another contender, Julie Trabold, a 35-year-old nurse from the Clintonville neighborhood secured 12% of the vote.
Rep Mohamed says he will work with the Somalian and other ethnic groups within his District to address those critical issues. And this includes specific critical issues, such as the opioid crisis and the lack of affordable housing, amidst the area’s expansion. Rep Mohamed also said he will continue working with all residents to preserve their community’s values.
“I also want to prioritize all communities’ needs and concerns, irrespective of their background or beliefs,”
For his next term, Mohamed will work with the party to help introduce legislation to increase funding for addiction treatment programs and mental health services, advocate for more affordable housing initiatives, and work closely with local organizations and government agencies to implement practical solutions. Additionally, Mohamed intends to meet with members of District 3 to actively listen to ideas from community members to create positive change.
