On February 13, media practitioners unite globally to commemorate World Radio Day 2024, under the theme “A century informing, entertaining, and educating.”
Resonating deeply within the hearts of broadcasters and journalists, this occasion prompts reflections on the profound impact of radio in communication.
From sharing inspiring stories to reflecting on the evolution of technology, professionals in the field of radio and broadcasting are taking this opportunity to celebrate the pivotal role of radio in communication.
At the World Radio Day celebration in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, Liberia, Lisa Diasay, President of the Female Journalists Association of Liberia (FeJAL), underscored the importance of accountability in the media.
She emphasized the need for factual reporting and transparency, stating, “The power of the media lies in fostering accountability and reconciliation through factual reporting, transparency, and not just informing, entertaining, and educating.”
Moreover, while celebrating World Radio Day, Moses K. Garzeawu, Liberian Correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), reflected on the profound impact of radio on his life. He shared on his Facebook page, “RADIO has been the most powerful figure that has shaped my life in a positive direction. Because of RADIO, I am me.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Liberian journalist Inez Reeves Koko emphasized the unique ability of radio to connect directly with listeners. She wrote on her social media page, “Through words, sounds, and the human voice, radio talks to an audience directly. It gives listeners the stories they need to better understand the world.”
As we celebrate World Radio Day, let us recognize and honor the enduring influence of radio in shaping lives, promoting dialogue, and bringing communities together.
From informing and entertaining to educating and inspiring, radio continues to be a powerful force for positive change in our world.
Happy World Radio Day to all the voices still resonating across the airwaves, touching hearts and minds in every corner of the globe.
According to UNESCO, “In an era marked by the dizzying speed of technological innovation and the rapid obsolescence of one shiny new platform after another, Radio is beginning its second century of service as one of the most dependable and widely utilized forms of media in the world.
Proclaimed in 2011 by the Member States of UNESCO and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day, February 13 became World Radio Day (WRD). Radio, as a technology, science, means of communications and system of programming audio elements has roots all the way back to the 1800s… so it can be safely said that the medium is already well into its second century.”
World Radio Day’s theme in 2024 shines a broad floodlight on Radio’s remarkable past, relevant present and promise of a dynamic future.
