On November 7, 2023, Terre Haute, Indiana, with a population of over 58,000 residents, made history by electing its youngest mayor at 27. Former army captain Brandon Sakbun, a member of our new American community and the son of Cambodian and Jamaican immigrants, defeated a four-term republican mayor by 20% percent.
Tomorrow, December 21, 2023, he will be sworn in as the 43rd Mayor of the city of Terre Haute. This victory is being hailed as a significant triumph for the Democratic Party in Terre Haute and the county of Vigo. Sakbun’s victory is not only important because of his age and background but also because he will be the first person of color to occupy the mayoralty in his hometown. This is a momentous achievement for diversity and representation in local government.
Born and raised in Terre Haute, Sakbun joined the army while studying at the University of Indiana. He served for years and was deployed overseas before returning to his hometown. Upon his return, he decided to pursue a career in public service, driven by his passion for public service and desire to bring positive change to his community.
During his campaign, Sakbun promised to prioritize issues such as affordable housing, education, and economic development. He also emphasized the importance of face-to-face interaction and collaboration in local government. “I believe in the power of working together and building strong relationships within our community,” he stated.
In a November 2023 interview with Politico, he shared with columnist Jesse Naranjo that Terre Haute was a community that greatly impacted him during his formative years as a child. His parents, from Cambodia and Jamaica, achieved the American dream in this small, up-and-coming Midwestern town. The people in Terre Haute strongly influenced his life and ultimately led him to join the military. He decided to run for office because he saw a significant need in Terre Haute.
During the interview, he also acknowledged his background, particularly his parents, for their determination to immigrate to America and overcome the challenges many new American families face when adjusting to their new lives to achieve success. Reflecting on his past, he expressed that their experience motivates him to give back to the community, and their story is truly inspirational.
Sakbun’s victory has been met with overwhelming support from his constituents, who are eager to see what he will accomplish during his term in office. Many have praised him for his dedication, determination, and ability to unite people from all backgrounds.
“Change does not happen overnight. Over the next four years, we will reshape many local government offices and take bite-sized chunks daily to deliver to Hauteans. The 2024 budget for the city was passed in October by the previous administration. I will look for every opportunity to improve that budget and set the city up for success in 2025 and beyond. Seeking out grants to supplement the budget is part of that plan”, said Mayor-elect Brandon Sakun.
