Cocomelon is popular due to its colorful animation, catchy music, and simple storylines that appeal to young children and adults. The educational content teaches children basic concepts such as colors, numbers, and shapes. The show has become a worldwide phenomenon, with over 100 million subscribers on YouTube and over 16 billion views.
According to Tonya Kelly of Columbus, Cocomelon has reached a broader audience by featuring characters from different backgrounds because it has identified a new market of viewers and catered to their needs.
Tonya Kelly has advocated for empowering young people long before she became an Educator and since the founding of the Empower Our Youth Foundation. The organization works to provide resources and education to support youth in their communities and works to create a safe and supportive environment where young people can thrive. Their programs and initiatives prevent bullying and harassment and promote positive social behaviors.
The Empower Our Youth Foundation always focuses on providing their kids with the best learning experiences. Therefore, the staff at the show encouraged the EOYF kids to participate in interactive activities, which helped to further their knowledge and skills. They also provided educational materials for the kids to take home and use to reinforce the lessons they had learned.
The show has featured Cody, a Black character, and Nina Rodriguez, a Latina character whose mom works as a firefighter. This diversity has helped Cocomelon reach 56% of its audience from African American, Hispanic, or Asian American households, according to Nielsen.
A Cocomelon performer, Emily, spoke with New Americans Magazine about why Columbus is an excellent addition to one of its tours.
Emily, a Cocomelon performer, explained that the program is educational through songs. She added that families and children can learn and interact with the show’s characters in a fun and engaging way. There’s also an array of activities, such as coloring and playing with toys, and the show runs three times a day, allowing them to reach an average of 100 people per gig.
“We’ve seen an incredible response from fans of all ages in each city we’ve visited. It’s surprising how quickly the children learn and sing Cocomelon songs and how much they love the characters. We’re excited to bring this experience to Central Ohio and share the joy of Cocomelon with the local community.”
Emily added that the Cocomelon Party Time Tour has been an enormous success. We started our tour in Atlanta, then moved on to Toronto, Buffalo, and Columbus. Everywhere we go, children love and know the characters, but the level of enthusiasm in Central Ohio is exceptionally high. The response from children here has been simply amazing.
