The National Orientation Agency (NOA) was established by Decree 100 of 1993, with the main objectives being to ensure that Government programmes and policies are better understood by the general public. It is pertinent to examine how much has been accomplished in the last 30 years. However, and with a new government in place the following programmes and policies need to be put in place to make the National Orientation Agency more effective.
Civic Education – The NOA promotes civic education and national values, ethics, and patriotism. The NOA can help citizens better understand their rights and responsibilities and the importance of active participation in the development and governance of the nation.
Social Cohesion – Nigeria is a diverse country with various ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds. The NOA can foster social cohesion by promoting unity, tolerance, and understanding among diverse groups. Stepping up its activities can contribute to national integration and harmony.
Promotion of Good Governance – The agency educates citizens about sound governance principles, transparency, and accountability. Doing so can encourage citizens to demand accountability from public officials and take part in the governance process.
National Security – The NOA’s Effective communication and sensitization efforts can help counter extremism, radicalization, and other security threats. Stepping up its activities in this area can enhance national security and stability.
Public Health – The NOA can also play a significant role in public health campaigns promoting vaccination awareness, disease prevention, and hygiene practices. Stepping up its health-related initiatives can positively affect public health outcomes.
Environmental Awareness – By intensifying its environmental awareness and conservation efforts, the NOA can help address environmental challenges, such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change, encouraging sustainable practices.
Disaster Preparedness – The NOA can educate citizens about disaster preparedness and response, helping communities become more resilient to natural disasters and emergencies.
Youth Empowerment – Stepping up its engagement with the youth can increase opportunities for empowerment, skill development, and entrepreneurship, contributing to a more vibrant and productive youth population.
In summary, the new government must fulfill its mandate effectively by actively promoting civic education, social cohesion, good governance, national security, public health, environmental awareness, disaster preparedness, and youth empowerment. The NOA can be used to achieve this.
