The New Americans Magazine, and the New American Community Information Center, in collaboration with the National Association of Political Correspondents, NAPOC will hold the International June 12 Nigeria Democracy Day at the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Karl Road branch on Monday, June 12, 2023, from 5pm to 7pm.
“The inaugural International June 12 Nigeria Democracy Day will feature Ohio elected officials sharing about community and opportunity to serve as elected officials in Ohio State, account by those who witnessed the June 12, 1993, elections in Nigeria and discussion on responsible and accountable democratic values in Africa,” said Deba Uwadiae, publisher of the New Americans magazine.
“We look forward to sharing Nigeria’s experience in the aborted 3rd Republic with the international community and hope to learn as well on how we can ensure that the Nigeria’s 4th Republic grows to become an acceptable democratic standard worthy of emulation.”
June 12 Nigeria Democracy Day is a nationally approved Holiday in Nigeria to commemorate June 12, 1993, General Election regarded as the freest election in Nigeria which Bashorun MKO Abiola, the Presidential Candidate of the then Social Democratic Party, SDP was believed to have won. He defeated the Presidential Candidate of the National Republican Convention, NRC Bashir Tofa. But before the announcement of the result, the election was annulled by the military government of then Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida.
On June 6, 2018, President Mohammadu Buhari declared June 12 as a national holiday and Nigeria Democracy Day. It became a nationally observed holiday in 2019.
A book titled “Nigeria’s Aborted 3rd Republic and the June 12 Debacle: Reporters’ Account” by journalists who covered the 3rd Republic was published last year.
