Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted has advised political parties to pick quality candidates during the primaries if they want to win elections.
“Both parties have their problems. My point for raising the issue is that the qualities of the candidates you pick in the primaries matter,” Lt. Jon Husted told New Americans magazine at the ImpactOhio 2022 Post General Election Conference.
“Sometimes we may think that we were very appealing during the primaries, that appeal may not stick when you do a general election.”
“For example, Tim Ryan was a good candidate, but so was JD Vance. That race was close because they were two good candidates in the race for the open seat.”
“But ultimately, Ohio is a red leaning state and as long as you pick a good quality candidate, you are going to win an election,” said Lr. Governor Husted.
“My counsel was doing that nationally if you want to take congress, if you want to take the US senate, if you want to stay in charge of Ohio, nominate people that are focused on the priorities that everyday people have in their lives.”
According to him, “It is not complicated. It is school, education, it is safe community, and quality of life. It is jobs and upward mobility. If people feel like you are focused on these issues you are going to win. That is as much a reminder to my own party as it is to anybody else.”
“We just have to take the lessons that the voters share with us. Voters are pretty smart. They tell you things at every election circle. You just need to listen. If you do that you will find that you will be successful in elections and in governing.”
