Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has reappointed Sudarshan Pyakurel to the New Americans Advisory Committee for a second term. Sudarshan Pyakurel is the executive director of the Bhutanese Community of Central Ohio (BCCO).
“I truly appreciate all of your work on behalf of the citizens of Ohio. Your contributions to the New Americans Advisory Committee have helped to make Ohio a better place to live, work and raise a family,” said Governor Mike DeWine in a letter addressed to Sudarshan Pyakurel.
In response Sudarshan Pyakurel said “It has been a humbling experience to be appointed to the New American Advisory Committee under Governor Kasich in 2018 and be reappointed by Governor Mike DeWine this year. It is my great privilege to represent my fellow New Americans in the state of Ohio, at the same time, I am thankful for this opportunity to work with Governor DeWine to make Ohio a great place for immigrants and refugees to start a new life, raise a family and be part of this great State.”
In May 2018 and by executive order, Governor John R. Kasich created the Office of Opportunities for New Americans and the New Americans Advisory Committee.
These entities aim to help new and current immigrants do their part for the great state and better integrate into the fabric of their communities.
The Office of Opportunities for New Americans is part of the Development Services Agency and focuses on making sure new Ohioans are job ready by coordinating existing efforts at the state level, communicating with immigrant support groups and by identifying and tearing down barriers that prevent or impede immigrants’ integration into society and economic success.
The 12-member advisory committee provides guidance to the Office of Opportunities for New Americans and is comprised of representatives of immigrant communities, business leaders, and non-profit organizations. They will be joined in their discussions by officials from the Ohio departments of Education, Higher Education, Job and Family Services, Commerce, Development Services Agency and Office of Workforce Transformation.
