The City of Columbus Department of Neighborhoods has opened application lines for the New American Leadership Academy with a deadline on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. Classes will begin on Wednesday, October 3 and end on Wednesday, December 12, 2018.
In a dispatch by the department’s New American Initiative Coordinator, Abdikhayr H. Soofe, “the program is an opportunity for New American professionals to foster personal development, enhance knowledge in civic engagement, and discover new ways to contribute to their respective communities and the Columbus community at large.
“During the Academy, selected applicants, known as fellows, will receive mentorship and professional development on various topics including government, civic responsibility, implicit bias, and others.
“The inaugural cohort of the Academy will begin on October 3rd, 2018 and end December 12th, 2018, with programming scheduled weekly or bi-weekly during this time,” he added.
According to the City, “Columbus, Ohio, is home to a wide array of new and once New Americans. In fact, the immigrant and refugee population is part of what makes our city vibrant, diverse, and thriving. Although Columbus has a long history of being a welcoming city, immigrants and refugees face unique challenges navigating local governments.”
