Houston Unites for a Historic Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration

By Okon Ekpenyong

For the first time, the city of Houston will host a single MLK Day Parade, bringing together the Black Heritage Society and the MLK Grande Parade on January 19, 2026, starting at 10 a.m. on San Jacinto Street downtown.

The event will feature college and high school marching bands, floats, community groups, and faith-based leaders.

Mayor John Whitmire, who helped broker the unity effort, said, “It will be a historic day in the City of Houston. I ran for mayor to unite our city, and this celebration of unity in January will be a perfect opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy and greatness.”

The parade’s Grand Marshals include radio personality Madd Hatter, MLK Grande Parade President Charles Stamps, and Mayor Whitmire himself. METRO is offering free rides to the parade, with trains running every few minutes.
