The Ohio New African Immigrants Commission, with the New Americans Book Fair 2025 will host the Rights on Wheels Civil Rights and Justice Access Workshop Series to educate and empower African immigrants and other underserved communities across Ohio on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the Columbus, Metropolitan Library, Karl Road branch from 3pm to 5pm.
The four-part traveling workshop series is a collaborative effort to educate and empower African immigrant and other underserved communities across Ohio by increasing awareness of civil rights protections and providing access to legal resources.
Stakeholders include the New African Immigrants Commission (NAIC), Ohio Civil Rights Commission (OCRC) and Ohio Justice Foundation (OJF) – Justice Bus Initiative.
The four core functions to be discussed include investigation, mediation, adjudication and education dealing with how to file a complaint.
Also to be learned include how to seek redress, areas and bases of discrimination, including Race/Ethnicity, Religion, National Origin, Age, Disability (including Reasonable Accommodations) Harassment and Retaliation.
There will be access to Legal Guidance (Ohio Justice Bus – Ohio Justice Foundation) following the workshops, the Ohio Justice Bus Initiative will be on-site to offer:
– Group Q&A Sessions (if time permits)
– One-on-One Consultations (available by RSVP – link on flyer/outreach material).
These consultations are open to participants seeking further guidance on civil rights or other legal issues and will be held for one hour immediately following the workshop, time permitting.
All sessions are free, open to the public, and will be recorded. Advance RSVP is encouraged, especially for Justice Bus consultations.
