Google has announced its plan to invest an additional $2.3 billion in Ohio this year with the investment focusing on skill development and infrastructure to support cloud services and the growing demand for Artificial Intelligence, AI. The new investment will help expand Google’s three technical infrastructure sites in Columbus, Lancaster and New Albany.
Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, who represents Ohio’s 3rd congressional district, joined Congressman Carey from the 15th district, Congressman Balderson from the 12th district, Ohio’s Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted, State Senator Michelle Reynolds, and others in Lockbourne in making the announcement.
“Data Centers are essential to our digital lives, and Google’s additional multibillion-dollar investment further establishes central Ohio as an important tech hub in America,” said Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted.
“We value Google’s continued investment in jobs and economic impact, and we look forward to additional partnerships in education, AI, and energy to further enhance Ohio’s position as the tech hub of the Midwest.”
Congresswoman Beatty mentioned how Google is creating numerous learning opportunities for young people. Her two grandchildren, for example, are learning how to code, and they have shown the congresswoman how navigating technology in the house through Google is beneficial in more ways than one. It proves that using Google continues to impact education and future innovators like her grandchildren.
The three investments in Central Ohio will help Ohioans and others to see things through Google’s eyes. Google’s eyes logo symbolizes vigilance, prophecy, and Omniscience. That is what Google has its sights on doing for the three new locations it’s pushing full steam towards.

Well, google didn’t hold back the sweets when it came to talking about its home in the buckeye state. From the current New Albany Meta (Facebook Center) to the existing New Albany Google Data Centre, new investments in Central Ohio has the right ingredients for energy infrastructure, an available workforce, and land.
“Google did announce an investment of $100,000 in Hamilton Public Schools, which is a prime example of how its expansion is helping our students in the State”, Beatty said. Jim Fowler, the chief technology officer for Nationwide Insurance, the board chairman for Columbus State Community College and Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted discussed the State’s education efforts.
“These initiatives include retraining teachers to better prepare students for opportunities like Google’s investments in education infrastructure and skilling, specifically to support cloud business. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty also emphasized the global opportunities that await students due to these efforts,” said Beatty.
Lancaster, Ohio, known for its strong community values and beautiful scenery, should see the growth of the expansion in Fairfield County.
In today’s gathering, Google provided the latest updates on its previous investments and announced additional investments. The tech giant’s decision to increase its data centres and invest $1.7 billion in 2021 was a win for the State and the company. Sharing this information with the public demonstrates their commitment to further development and expansion.
The tech giant has invested over $4.4 billion since announcing 2019 plans to expand its operations in New Albany, including the additional $2.3 billion announced today. This investment will support their cloud business and the growing demand for AI, contributing to Ohio’s infrastructure development.
The New Albany location was a $600 million project, significantly contributing to Google’s future development and investments. This substantial investment also catalyzed the expansion of operations for several other significant companies into New Albany and its surrounding areas. Consequently, this led to the region gaining recognition as the Silicon Heartland of the Midwest.
Congressman Beatty also mentioned that approximately 20% of the contractors working on Google’s construction projects in Ohio are from minority groups, which is impressive. Google has also invested $210 million in minority vendors, which is a promising start, and they have committed to doing more. Additionally, Google made a financial contribution to the Martin Luther King Performing Center in her 3rd congressional district. It will help update many exhibits and provide educational opportunities for minority students to learn about various histories and knowledge through Google’s technology.
Construction is underway for the data Centre in Columbus and Lancaster, which is already drawing a substantial influx of workers to the city and helping provide a much-needed economic stimulus. The Columbus Data Centre’s acquisition of the 480-acre land was confirmed through the Franklin County Auditor’s Office records, indicating a purchase price exceeding $30 million in May per multiple sources.
Google currently has 24 data centres spread across 13 states and nine countries. The addresses for these new centres are 225 Rathmell Rd in Lockbourne and 105 Whiley Rd in Lancaster, both situated west of U.S. 33. But there has yet to be a set date when these data centres will complete their construction. However, Google’s executives at the Lockbourne locations stated today that it will serve as the location for the state-of-the-art facility.
But what exactly is a data Centre, and why is it so crucial for a city like Lancaster? A data Centre is a large facility that accommodates computer systems and related components, including storage and telecommunications equipment. These Google centres will provide global users with search, Gmail, and YouTube services. Furthermore, these centres support Internet infrastructure, cloud computing, and other digital services.
Data centres have become crucial in the modern world as technology advances and data becomes increasingly important for businesses and organizations. They are essential for storing, managing, and processing large amounts of data, making them crucial for the smooth operation and growth of companies worldwide. In essence, data centres are the cornerstone of the digital era.
State officials hope that adding Google’s data Centre in Lancaster will continue to create thousands of opportunities, which would help keep the university system here. The hope will also be to attract other tech companies, businesses, and others looking for employment in the State. This will create a ripple effect, increasing job growth and economic activity.
As Central Ohio continues to attract significant tech companies, 14 university executives convened with state officials and industry experts on June 11 to discuss harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence while being aware of its pros and cons. Apart from the discussions on AI, the academic leaders are aware of the region’s current and future investments, therefore vowing to find ways to allocate resources to equip current and future graduates with the necessary skills when these opportunities become available.
So, having these universities and state officials understand the potential economic benefits of these data centres once they are up and running. It will positively put pressure on what the states need to do to perfect their workforce development programs and strategies.
“As federal agents, we must prioritize education. We must ensure that all students, including minorities and new Americans, have equal access to opportunities such as coding training and an understanding of AI functionality. This is not just about education but also about preparing students for new job opportunities. It is essential to ensure that minority students are not left behind in this process”, Congressman Joyce Beatty, who represents Columbus 3rd district, also noted.
Google has a reputation for being environmentally conscious and has committed to powering its data centres with 100% renewable energy. This aligns with Lancaster’s sustainability efforts and will help the city achieve its goal of becoming more eco-friendly. It is also one of the top 18 companies globally, grossing over.
Beatty told the New Americans magazine, “With all of this new technology coming to Central Ohio, it is vital to understand how we ensure that it is bilingual and embracing cultural differences. After all, when you interact with AI, you interact with a programmed entity. So, I’ve been prioritizing understanding how it is programmed to handle different types of questions and how it is trained to respond in a way that reflects the diversity of our democracy.”
Those visiting or working at the data Centre can explore several points of interest in Lancaster during their free time. Some popular attractions include the Ohio Glass Museum, the Georgian Museum, and the Sherman House Museum. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the nearby Lancaster Campground, Outdoor Center, and Rising Park, which have beautiful hiking trails and scenic views.
Google is putting on the Ritz at Lockbourne by adding Sills Ball Park, which has sports complexes for visitors of all ages, and Hamilton Township Park, which offers a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy. Those who love golf can take advantage of the amenities at Fox Fire Golf Club. Please keep your eyes on Google as it ushers us positively toward the future.
