Liberian Community Organizer and Entrepreneur Hosts Christmas Giveaway for Over 400 Families

Posted by: New Americans Magazine , December 29, 2025

By Danlette G. Washington

On December 20, 2025, the Mildred Cole Memorial Foundation Inc. hosted its annual Christmas celebration and giveaway at Cooper Farm along the Fendell Highway in Liberia. The event was marked by joy, gratitude, and relief for families navigating poverty, disability, and mental health challenges.

More than 400 families received bags of rice and essential food items, easing the burden of the holiday season. Children were at the center of the celebration, with 29 students receiving take-home packages and Christmas gifts. In recognition of academic dedication, three students were honored for outstanding yearly averages of 80%, 83%, and 84%.

The event was made possible through the collective efforts of sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community members demonstrating the impact of collaboration and diaspora-led initiatives.

The Story Behind the Foundation

The Mildred Cole Memorial Foundation was founded in September 2022 by Mrs. Famatta Tarr and her late husband Honorable Benjamin Tarr in memory of Mildred Cole, whose lifelong struggle with mental health challenges shaped the organization’s mission. The foundation focuses on supporting children living with one or both parents affected by mental health conditions, disabilities, or economic hardship, with a strong emphasis on education and basic support.

Honoring a Shared Vision

The foundation’s journey began with Madam Tarr and late husband, Hon. Benjamin Tarr, who co-founded the organization with her. His passing last year marked a profound loss, but his vision continues to guide the foundation’s work. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

Despite personal grief, Famatta has remained committed, carrying forward the mission they built together. Her leadership reflects strength, faith, and firm belief in service.

Beyond Philanthropy: A Woman of Many Roles

In addition to her nonprofit work, Famatta Tarr is also the founder of Advance Care Network, a healthcare agency dedicated to empowering individuals to become exceptional healthcare workers. The organization focuses on quality education that blends professional skill with compassion, values that align closely with her humanitarian work.

For Madam Tarr, giving back is not a seasonal gesture, it is a lifelong commitment rooted in faith, resilience, and community responsibility.

Diaspora Impact and the Meaning of Christmas

The Christmas outreach in Liberia stands as a powerful example of how diaspora communities can remain connected and responsive to the needs of home. For many families, the support was more than material, it was reassurance that they are seen, remembered, and valued.

As the holiday season closed, the Mildred Cole Memorial Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its mission beyond Christmas, working year-round to support children and families facing mental health challenges, disabilities, and poverty.
