City of Columbus, Ohio leaders, including Mayor Andrew J. Ginther, Columbus Division of Police Chief Elaine Bryant, Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein, and Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin have assured residents that the Columbus Division of Police “does not participate in immigration enforcement and does not inquire about immigration status during routine policing,” while responding to reports of increased activities of federal officials from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE.
The leaders reaffirmed that that Columbus remains a welcoming city and that protecting the dignity, safety, and trust of all residents—regardless of immigration status—remains a top priority.
“Everyone in Columbus deserves to feel safe and respected, no matter where they come from or where they are in the immigration process,” said Mayor Andrew Ginther.
“Our city will continue to stand up for our residents and ensure they have access to accurate information and trusted resources,” adding that “fear thrives when people don’t have clear information”
“We are committed to open communication and making sure residents know their rights and where to turn for help.”
Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant said “Our officers are here to protect and serve every resident, not to enforce federal immigration law.”
“Our partnerships with refugee agencies are critical in making sure families receive guidance they can trust,” said Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant.
The city leaders emphasized that maintaining trust between law enforcement and immigrant communities remains essential to keeping all neighbourhoods safe.
“When communities are informed, they are safer and more confident reaching out for help when they need it.”
These partnerships help ensure residents feel informed, supported, and secure during periods of heightened concern.
Community members were also encouraged to support one another by sharing accurate information, checking in on neighbors, and promoting unity during uncertain times.
