The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) opens From the House of Oba: The Private Collection of Baba Shongo Obadina, curated by the William H. Thomas Gallery, in its Loann Crane Gallery at 182 E. Long St. From the House of Oba will be on view through April 25, 2025. An opening reception will be held on Friday, March 7 from 5:30-7 p.m.

From the House of Oba: The Private Collection of Baba Shongo Obadina is a group exhibition of seven artists with connections to the William H. Thomas Gallery in Columbus. Artists featured in the exhibition include Ed Colston, Abdi Fakeye, Baba Jubal, Grandpa Smokey, Aminah Robinson and Baba Shongo.

“Rooted in heritage and creative mastery, From the House of Oba unveils a striking collection from the private archives of Baba Shongo Obidina,” said Charles Ewing, director of the William H. Thomas Gallery.

“This exhibition highlights the artistry of African and African Diasporic creators—many of whom have played a vital role in shaping the legacy of the William H. Thomas Art Gallery. Their works stand as testaments to resilience, history and the enduring power of visual storytelling, offering an inspiring journey through culture, memory and artistic evolution.”

Loann Crane Gallery hours are Monday-Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday-Friday by appointment. The gallery is also a meeting space and subject to availability for drop-in visits; visitors who are planning a visit are encouraged to contact GCAC at gallery@gcac.org to ensure availability.

The featured artwork will be available virtually on the gallery website at gcacgallery.org.

Named for the long-time benefactor of the arts and social justice in Columbus, the Loann Crane Gallery is located in GCAC’s office building at 182 E. Long St. downtown. Exhibitions in the gallery are focused on showcasing work by artists from historically marginalized communities.
