Cyclist Biniam Girmay Symbolizes Emergence of African Cyclist on World Stage

Posted by: New Americans Magazine , July 17, 2024

By Okon Ekpenyong

Biniam Girmay of Eritrea’s incredible performance at the 2024 Tour of France has raised questions and eyebrows amongst some, with doping accusations being thrown his way. However, those following his journey closely know that this is not just a case of a talented cyclist winning a race. Girmay’s success symbolizes something much bigger – the emergence of Eritrea and African cycling on the world stage.

The Eritrean cyclist has taken the cycling world by storm with his historic performance in the 2024 Tour de France. He has won stages 3, 8, and 12 and finished second in two other stages. Despite a crash in stage 16, he bounced back the very next day to win the intermediate sprint. This remarkable feat has left many in awe and admiration, but unfortunately, not enough people are talking about it.

European and American cyclists have held sway in the cycling world for years. However, with Girmay’s performance, a new narrative is unfolding. Many believe he has ignited a renaissance in Eritrean and African cycling, a transformation that is unfolding right before our eyes. This is a story that not only deserves to be told but also celebrated. Girmay’s success is fresh air in a sport plagued with doping scandals and controversies. He is a true underdog from a country with little cycling infrastructure and resources. Yet, he has managed to compete and excel against some of the best cyclists in the world. This is a testament to his hard work, determination, and talent.

It’s high time we spotlight Biniam Girmay and his historic performance in the 2024 Tour de France. This is a story that needs to be shared with the world. Let’s take a moment to appreciate and celebrate this remarkable achievement and give Girmay the recognition and attention he deserves. He is not just a cyclist but a beacon of hope and inspiration for countless aspiring African athletes. Let’s continue to support and cheer him on as he etches his name in the annals of cycling history.
