The vibrant city of Columbus will come alive Saturday, June 29, at 7 pm as the Haitian-American community hosts the first annual Cultural Soirée at the prestigious Lincoln Theater Cardinal Ballroom, Columbus, Ohio. This grand event, organized by Faveur & Company, aims to celebrate and showcase the diversity and richness of Haitian culture through music, dance, food, and art. The soirée will be graced by the presence of the Haitian International superstar, Emeline Michel.

The soirée also aims to unite the Haitian community while addressing practical needs such as housing and employment. The event strives to help Haitian immigrants thrive in their new homes while preserving their cultural identity by providing resources and support. This mission is crucial in promoting all the unique attributes the Haitian community offers. 

The highlight of the evening will be a live performance by the renowned international artist Emeline Michel, also known as the “Queen of Haitian Song.” Michel is a talented musician and a powerful voice for social change, using her platform to address crucial issues such as poverty, women’s rights, and the preservation of Haitian culture. Her fusion of traditional Haitian rhythms with modern influences has gained international recognition and cemented her place as a cultural icon in the Haitian community.

In addition to her musical talents, Michel is a Red Cross ambassador, recognized for her humanitarian work in Haiti. The Cultural Soirée will also feature a video presentation on the significance of diversity, inclusion, and the rich heritage of Haiti, providing attendees with a deeper understanding of the cultural tapestry that makes Haiti so unique.
Her performances have graced prestigious stages and events such as Carnegie Hall, the United Nations, and the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Beyond her musical talents, Michel is a strong advocate for women and children’s rights on a global scale.

Guests at the event can indulge in authentic Haitian cuisine, enjoy traditional dance performances, and savor the spoken word through enchanting poetry readings. The immersive experience is designed to delight the senses and foster a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Haitian culture.

According to an April 2024 report from the Springfield News-Sun, Mayor Rob Rue of Springfield, Ohio, said within the past 3-5 years, approximately 10,000 Haitian immigrants have moved to the city. There has also been a significant increase in Haitian immigrants settling in different parts of Ohio, including Dayton, Cleveland, Toledo, and the central Ohio region.

Sophia Pierrelus says she is familiar with these statistics and has been working with community organizations and social service agencies in central Ohio to provide resources and support for the new Haitian residents relocating or living in Central Ohio. She aims to make central Ohio an attractive and welcoming place for Haitian immigrants to call home. The 1st Haitian Cultural Soirée is just the beginning of creating a sense of inclusivity for this community.

The first annual Cultural Soirée promises an unforgettable celebration and cultural exchange evening. It offers attendees a unique and rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the essence of Haitian culture through the captivating music of Emeline Michel and the rich tapestry of art, dance, and food.
