My Journey: From Educator to Advocate – Surviving Ileostomy and Overcoming Health Challenges

Posted by: New Americans Magazine , June 25, 2024

By Tonya Kelly

Hello, my name is Tonya Kelly, and I’m thrilled to share my story with you. I’m a dedicated educator, an advocate for anti-bullying efforts, and a survivor of a three-month battle with Ileostomy. It all started in December 2023 when I was grappling with symptoms of Gastroparesis and Multiple Sclerosis, which rendered me unable to walk and caused severe colon motility pain.

Despite these challenges, I was resolute in my mission to positively impact my community and students. However, life took an unexpected turn when I was hospitalized for over 3.5 months and had to undergo spinal stenosis surgery. This led to the decision to undergo an ileostomy, a procedure where a part of my small intestine was brought through an opening in my abdomen to collect stool in a bag. While this might seem daunting and life-altering, I’ve discovered an unwavering strength and resilience in this journey. I’m eager to share this journey with others to inspire and instill hope. Join me as I navigate this new chapter in my life and strive to make a difference in the world.

What is Gastroparesis

Gastroparesis is a condition that affects stomach muscle movement and can be caused by damage to the vagus nerve. It can lead to dehydration, malnutrition, and blood sugar changes, as well as complications like bezoars.

What is Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, a nervous system disorder, can also cause gastroparesis, worsening symptoms. Further research is needed to understand the exact link between the two conditions.

After my diagnosis

During this challenging time, I discovered the profound power of affirmations. These simple yet potent words became my guiding light, offering solace and strength during moments of uncertainty. They became more than just phrases; they became my lifeline, anchoring me to hope and resilience.

Support Group

To connect with others facing similar challenges, I started an Ostomy Support group called “Ostomy Warriors” in Columbus, Ohio. As an affiliate of The United Ostomy Association of America, I sought to use my voice to raise awareness about ostomy care, advocate for improvements in medical quality, and provide support to those struggling with mental anguish, anxiety, and depression.

Ostomy Warrior

Through my experiences, I have learned the importance of giving Ostomy Warriors a voice and empowering others to share their stories. Thank you for your support and blessings as I continue on this path of resilience and advocacy.

‘Ostomy Warriors’ is more than just a support group. It’s a safe and welcoming space for individuals living with an ostomy. We meet regularly to discuss experiences, share advice, and provide emotional support. In this group, members find a sense of community and understanding, helping them overcome the challenges of living with an ostomy. ‘Ostomy Warriors’ has significantly impacted its members, providing a support system to navigate daily struggles and celebrate successes. It’s a place where you belong, where you’re understood, and where you’re supported.

Visions of Life through Colors

Amidst this journey, I found solace in self-publishing an affirmation coloring book for teens and adults titled ‘Visions of Life through Colors.’ This book is more than just a coloring book. It’s a sanctuary of tranquility, where coloring intertwines with the uplifting energy of affirmations. Each stroke of color represents self-care, self-empowerment, and self-discovery, reflecting my path toward inner strength as an Ostomy Warrior. The coloring book is not just a book; it’s a tool for empowerment and is set to launch in July 2024.

Support from friends

“Tonya Kelly has firsthand experience living with Gastroparesis and Multiple Sclerosis, two debilitating conditions that can significantly impact a person’s daily life. Her personal experiences offer insight into the challenges she faces, such as constant pain, fatigue, and difficulty with mobility and digestion. Despite these challenges, Tonya has found ways to overcome them through medication, therapy, or making necessary lifestyle changes. Kelly’s journey is a powerful example of resilience and determination in adversity, “Kelly’s friends said.

You can find me on TikTok @ tkelz53, Instagram @tkelz50, and my website http://www.inspireupthevoice.org/. I am also grateful for the custom bag created by Kincsbynikki, which has become an essential part of my journey as an ostomate. The bag’s design and functionality have made a significant difference in my daily life, making me more comfortable and confident. I highly recommend their products to anyone undergoing ostomy care, like me.
