The Intersection of Politics and Classics: The Journey of Sarah B Pomeroy, Pomeroy of Columbus and Other Political Classics Scholars

Posted by: New Americans Magazine , January 19, 2024

By Okon Ekpenyong

At first glance, comparing the field of classics to running for public office may sound like a strange combination. However, there are many similarities between studying classics and running for a political office.

Sarah B Pomeroy, for example, is a distinguished professor and author of classics, and Sarah Pomeroy of Columbus, an attorney and state representative hopeful, not related to the best of my knowledge.

Both fields require a deep understanding of history, rhetoric, and public speaking skills. Additionally, both fields involve critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to work well with others. Just as a politician must appeal to a diverse audience and navigate complex issues, a classicist must be able to interpret and analyze ancient texts and cultures to make them relevant to a modern audience.

Sarah B Pomeroy

According to testmaxprep.com, classical studies is one of the best majors for law school preparation due to its high acceptance rate of over 83 percent. The political hopeful may know a thing or two about classical studies because individuals may have an easier time comprehending the complex laws and rulings often referenced in the legal profession.

And so, mentioning Pomeroy, the classicist, and Pomeroy of Columbus, the attorney and political hopeful, is highly relevant. Pomeroy of Columbus may have heard of the classicist; if not, perhaps she will after reading this article.

Sarah B. Pomeroy has significantly contributed to her field, publishing several books and publications. In addition, she has been recognized for her achievements by being elected to the American Philosophical Society. This American classicist and historian is known for her research on women in antiquity. She is a professor emeritus of classics and history at Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center. Pomeroy has written several books on the topic, including “Goddesses, Whores, Wives, and Slaves: Women in Classical Antiquity” and “The Murder of Regilla: A Case of Domestic Violence in Antiquity.”

Pomeroy of Columbus has also been building her legacy and making a name for herself in the legal world. Recently, Pomeroy of Columbus announced her campaign to run for the Ohio 10th House District. As a professor of classics, Sarah B. Pomeroy, the classicist, would undoubtedly be proud of Pomeroy of Columbus for running to make a difference in the lives of others. The classicist always champions women’s growth in the workplace and as members of society. And so for Pomeroy of Columbus, her diverse background and experience make her the perfect candidate to represent her district and positively impact the state legislature.

Her campaign kickoff was at the beautiful Schmidt’s Sausage Haus Restaurant in the Historic Germain Village. The study of classics can also be related to history of the restaurant through the concept of tradition. Just as J. Fred Schmidt’s grandson, George F. Schmidt, continued the family legacy by opening the first restaurant, classical studies emphasize the importance of preserving and passing down cultural practices and customs. Additionally, the restaurant’s location near J. Fred’s meat packing plant in German Village highlights the influence of history and heritage in shaping the present. This connection to the past is also a key aspect of classical studies, as it allows us to understand and appreciate the foundations of our modern society.

So, at the launch, Pomeroy of Columbus was joined by a diverse group of attendees. This included her present and former colleagues from the city of Columbus attorney office, her wonderful parents, and other friends and supporters. The presence of such a diverse group highlights Pomeroy’s ability to bring people from different backgrounds and perspectives together, making her a strong candidate for office. It also shows her widespread support from various communities, making her a formidable force in the upcoming election.

This driven and ambitious woman was not only the valedictorian of her high school, but she also went on to make Michigan State University proud during her undergraduate studies. She then continued her education and obtained a master’s and law degrees from The Ohio State University. Pomeroy’s academic success was only the beginning of her impressive resume.

She has worked as a research assistant, interned at prestigious institutions, and even landed a job at one of the top law firms in the country, Jones Day. After gaining valuable experience, Pomeroy returned to her hometown of Columbus to work for the city. Her dedication and hard work did not go unnoticed, and she quickly became a valuable community member.

Today, Sarah B. Pomeroy continues to pave the way for other women writers and storytellers who want to make a difference in their community and the world of classical studies. Again, whether or not she is related to the Pomeroy of Columbus, her achievements and hard work are to be admired and celebrated. As Pomeroy of Columbus embarks on this new journey in politics, it is clear that she has the drive, determination, and passion to make a positive impact and leave a lasting legacy. And one that would make the classicist very proud.
