As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, communities nationwide reflect on the varied histories, cultures, and traditions that define the American experience. For South Asian Americans, America250 is a chance to honor colorful heritage and renew values that help families strengthen communities across the nation.
BAPS was proud to partner with America250.org, the official nonpartisan initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Through this partnership, BAPS joined a national effort to engage every American in the largest and most inclusive anniversary in the nation’s history. South Asian Americans have formed the American narrative for generations. From early immigrants seeking new horizons to the millions who today enrich every field, their experiences mirror the larger American journey—characterized by resilience, service, opportunity, and civic engagement.
One such community is BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a Hindu organization that has served the United States for over fifty years. Since beginning its activities in the early 1970s, BAPS has grown with the nation, establishing mandirs, inspiring volunteerism, preserving traditions, and promoting civic participation—welcoming all backgrounds. As part of America250, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Columbus joined communities nationwide and commemorated this milestone by hosting activities focused on faith, service, gratitude, and community participation.
The celebration featured patriotic cultural presentations, an open house, community service activities including a BAPS Charities Walk-Run, and recognition of local leaders who contribute to the well-being of the region. Visitors toured the mandir, learned about Hindu traditions, and participated in conversations highlighting the role that diverse communities have played in shaping the American experience. State Representative Brian Lorenz presented a proclamation to BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in recognition of its America 250 Celebration.
The event united community members, local leaders, faith representatives, nonprofit partners, and residents from across the region to celebrate the values that unite Americans and highlight the contributions of diverse communities to the nation’s ongoing story. For many families, this anniversary is a chance to express gratitude for the freedoms and opportunities that have allowed generations to practice their faith, pursue careers, raise families, and enrich society while upholding cultural heritage.
Across the country, BAPS mandirs mark America250 with open houses, gatherings, interfaith programs, service projects, patriotic displays, and charitable initiatives. These actions show a commitment to building understanding, forging relationships, and serving communities with compassion and cooperation.
BAPS Charities has woven America250 themes into its annual Walk-Run events, uniting tens of thousands of participants across North America for local charitable causes. Over the years, these events have supported hundreds of organizations working in health, education, humanitarian aid, environmental protection, and social well-being.

America250 is also an opportunity to reflect on the role immigrant communities have played in building the nation. Americans of varied backgrounds have preserved their traditions while adopting a shared civic identity. Though their experiences differ, they share core values: service, respect, responsibility, and devotion to community.
Guided by the teachings of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, BAPS devotees work to embody humility, compassion, and respect for all. These values inspire volunteerism, outreach, and efforts to foster harmony among people of different backgrounds and beliefs.
As America celebrates this milestone, BAPS devotees stay dedicated to serving society, building links of understanding, and strengthening the communities they call home. Through service, civic involvement, and local partnership, they join millions in honoring the shared values that have influenced the nation for 250 years.
