BAPS Charities Walkathon Unites 50,000 for America250

By Bhargav Trivedi

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, BAPS Charities launched its 2026 Spirit of Service Walk-Run, underscoring a commitment to strengthening American civic engagement. The event, marked by a stirring national anthem and united by 50,000 participants across the United States and Canada, marks an early milestone for America250 and inspires a collective spirit of service.

In Columbus, Ohio, the kickoff was joined by State Representatives Latyna M. Humphrey, Brian Lorenz, Crystal Lett, Beryl Brown Piccolantonio and Mark Sigrist who highlighted the Walk-Run as a living example of the volunteerism that has defined the American character for 2.5 centuries.

“Volunteerism helps our young people internalize the idea that we are all part of a community and that the way we make our communities better and lives better is by contributing to a common good,” said State Representative Beryl Brown Piccolantonio, adding that the “Spirit of Service provides a stable foundation for local community growth.”

A Tapestry of Service: The American Story in Action

While the statistics are vast—spanning 100 cities and decades of impact—the true story of the Walk-Run is found in the individual lives it touches. BAPS Charities’ efforts are rooted in national resilience, with members providing relief after Hurricanes Milton and Helene and local families planting over 2 million trees, viewing service as a bridge between cultural heritage and civic duty.

The Heart of the Walk: The “Spirit of Service” was embodied by three generations walking side by side. From young students in New York to professionals in California, the walk served as a renewal of a two-century-old American promise: that we stand together in service to each other. “Seeing my children wave the flag at the start line made me realize that service is how we truly belong to this country,” said one local volunteer.

Strengthening Local Partnerships

In Columbus, approximately 400 participants gathered at Scioto Audobon Metropark to raise awareness for A Kid Again, a nonprofit dedicated to foster hope, happiness, and healing for children with life-threatening conditions and their families.

This partnership ensures that the funds raised will support projects such as hope-filled adventures, memory-making experiences, and family-centered programs for children with life-threatening conditions, directly impacting the lives of local residents. Organizers note that the Walk-Run’s growth is a testament to the power of collective action, drawing diverse communities together in support of meaningful causes.

“We are coming together and we are celebrating this year and I think we have needed a reason to celebrate for many years now post COVID, so to be serving especially kids who are medically fragile and going through difficult journeys and for us to be standing together to support them and give them resources to help them to just feel like a normal kid, I think it goes such a long way in preserving the spirit of America which is spirit of ingenuity and philanthropy,” said State Representative Crystal Lett.

Also, Jared Buerger, Executive Director, A Kid Again said “Collaboration of two non-profit organizations working together is such a beautiful and powerful thing and it is such a wonderful impact. You can make a deep impact on community by volunteering and donating”
