Ohio Governor DeWine Expresses Gratitude in Last State of the State Address
Cheered into the Congress Chamber in a procession led by members of the Ohio Legislative Committee of the 136th General Assembly, Governor Mike DeWine began his 2026 State of the State Address, the last as a Governor, with “gratitude” to all.
“It is with deep gratitude that I begin my address today: With gratitude to all of you in the General Assembly and to all who have served here in the last
eight years, I thank you for your service to Ohio,” said Governor Mike DeWine.
He acknowledged the roles played by former Lieutenant Governor and current U.S. Senator and his wife — Jon and Tina Husted; current Lieutenant Governor Jim and wife, Ellen Tressel; Cabinet and their agency staffs; the troopers in Ohio State Highway Patrol and members of Ohio National Guard.
Highlights of the State of the State Address included Reading, OhioSEE, Chronic Absenteeism, Recess and Team Tressel Fitness Challenge, Cell Phones/Screentime/Social Media, and Primary Seatbelt Law.
“With 70% of households with children under five participating, Ohio continues to have the highest number of children enrolled in the nation. The evidence is clear that the Science of Reading is the best way to teach children how to read. With the support of the Ohio General Assembly, the Science of Reading is required to be taught in every classroom in Ohio, from preschool programs to high school.
“Ohio is starting to see results in the state’s youngest learners, thanks in part to the Science of Reading. This past fall, kindergarten readiness statewide improved to 8.3%, equating to an additional 7,300 Ohio children,” said Governor DeWine.
