Ohio Celebrates National Construction Appreciation Week

By Okon Ekpenyong

Incorporating construction education in primary, secondary, or higher education can ignite students’ interest as the nation celebrates National Construction Week from September 16 to September 20.

This exposure can help students considering career paths such as computer science, engineering, and architecture realize the diverse opportunities within the construction industry.

By gaining a foundational understanding of construction, students can explore multiple career paths and envision themselves as the future innovators and builders shaping Ohio’s future. It also assists them in narrowing down their specific interests within the STEM fields.

Incidentally, Ohio recognizes National Construction Appreciation Week to highlight its thriving construction industry and vast opportunities.

Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted encourage individuals to explore this field, especially as it is on record that 1 in 23 Ohioans work in construction.

Construction workers are Ohio’s unsung heroes, building infrastructure from skyscrapers to homes. The industry is vital to Ohio’s economy, with companies expanding and moving in.

Local schools partner with technical centers to offer construction Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. For example, Focus Learning Academy’s North and West campuses will participate in the NCCER High School Builder Program.

These programs teach valuable skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration. Students can earn an average of $72,000 annually after completing apprenticeships.

Ohio’s construction industry offers few opportunities for career advancement, such as apprenticeships, on-the-job training, and classroom instruction, in-demand jobs include Laborers, Electricians, Carpenters, Welders, and Operating Engineers.
