A documentary examining one of the most consequential events in Liberia’s political history, the assassination of former President William R. Tolbert Jr. and the 1980 military coup, is set to premiere in Columbus on Friday, August 14, 2026, at The Ave Space, 4284 Macsway Avenue, Columbus, Ohio.
Offering audiences an in-depth look at the assassination of former President William R. Tolbert Jr. and the 1980 military coup that changed the course of the country, the Columbus premiere will begin with a red-carpet reception at 6 p.m., followed by the screening at 7 p.m. at The Ave Space, 4284 Macsway Ave., Columbus, Ohio. Admission is $15.
“The Assassination of President William R. Tolbert Jr.”, produced by Liberian filmmaker Gerald “Gee-Bee” Barclay in collaboration with Playlist Africa Media, will make its Columbus debut on Friday, Aug. 14, at The Ave Space. The premiere is expected to draw Liberians from across Ohio and neighboring states, along with historians, students, and others interested in Liberia’s history.
The documentary explores the events leading up to the April 12, 1980, coup that ended the Tolbert administration and ushered in a new political era for Liberia. Through interviews with historians, former government officials, members of the Tolbert family, and other experts, the film examines the circumstances surrounding the president’s assassination and the lasting impact the coup has had on Liberia’s political and social development.
Rather than simply recounting historical events, the documentary seeks to encourage reflection and informed discussion about Liberia’s past while exploring lessons that remain relevant today.
The Columbus screening follows a series of successful premieres in Atlanta, the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, Maryland, and Philadelphia, where the documentary has received strong reviews from audiences and critics alike.
After attending one of the screenings, an audience member, Marjorie Duncan Forleh described the film as “10/10. A masterclass in modern documentary filmmaking,” praising it as “meticulously researched” and commending its use of historical evidence and expert analysis.
Another viewer called the documentary “an enlightening and thought-provoking exploration of history and legacy,” while others have described it as “a must-watch” that encourages meaningful conversations about Liberia’s history and future.
The documentary has also received international recognition, including selection for screening at the 2026 Joburg Film Festival, further expanding its global audience.
Organizers say the event is intended not only to showcase the documentary but also to provide an opportunity for members of the Liberian community and the general public to engage with an important chapter of Liberia’s history through education, dialogue, and reflection.
