The National Alliance on Mental Illness hosted its impactful Youth Advocacy Day and Brunch in downtown Columbus, bringing together youth advocates, educators, legislators, caregivers, and community organizations to promote mental health awareness, resiliency, and youth empowerment across Ohio.
The event focused on encouraging open conversations about mental health while creating opportunities for young people to become leaders and advocates within their communities. Attendees gathered to celebrate youth voices and learn more about new resiliency-focused programs designed to support emotional wellness and prevention efforts among Ohio’s younger generation.
The morning brunch opened with registration and networking opportunities, allowing participants to connect with community leaders and mental health advocates. The program included presentations centered on prevention, lived experiences, and community support systems that help youth overcome challenges related to mental health.
Special legislative acknowledgements were presented during the event by State Representatives including Jodi Salvo and Dontavius Jarrells, recognizing the importance of investing in youth mental health resources and advocacy initiatives throughout the state.
One of the most meaningful moments of the day was the 20th Annual Resiliency Ring Rally, where participants united together to symbolize strength, hope, healing, and support for mental wellness. Guests later marched to the Ohio Statehouse led by a drumline and NAMI Next Gen Youth members, demonstrating solidarity and advocacy for improved mental health services and education.
The event also featured a special performance by Heather Evans and inspirational remarks from community leaders, caregivers, and youth advocates who shared their personal experiences and encouraged attendees to continue breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness.
In addition to youth advocacy programming, NAMI Ohio also shared important legislative updates involving mental health and wellness initiatives currently being discussed at the Ohio Statehouse. Information distributed during the event highlighted several proposed bills related to mental health services, parental consent requirements for minors’ mental health treatment, property tax levies supporting community services, and new legislation surrounding community wellness and behavioral health programs.
Among the legislation discussed was the Mental Health and Community Wellness Act, which aims to expand community-based mental health and substance abuse programs throughout Ohio. Additional discussions included proposed regulations related to kratom product safety standards and ongoing conversations surrounding access to mental health care for minors.

Organizers emphasized that advocacy and education remain critical in helping families better understand mental health challenges while improving access to resources, support systems, and treatment options for youth and adults alike.
NAMI Ohio’s mission continues to focus on improving the quality of life for individuals living with mental illness while supporting families and communities through education, advocacy, and compassion.
The Youth Advocacy Day served as a powerful reminder that when communities come together, young people are empowered to lead, inspire change, and create a future where mental health is treated with dignity, understanding, and respect.
