IShowSpeed’s Africa Tour Captivates Millions, Reshapes Global Perceptions of the Continent

By Danlette G. Washington

Popular American YouTuber and livestreamer IShowSpeed has concluded a historic tour across Africa, visiting more than 18 African countries in just 28 days and bringing African culture, history, and everyday life to millions of viewers around the world.

Throughout the month-long journey, Speed used his high-energy, in-real-life livestreams to highlight the beauty, diversity, and vibrancy of African nations, offering a stark contrast to long-standing stereotypes often portrayed in Western media. His tour reached millions of subscribers and followers globally, many of whom are young people.

Across social media platforms, viewers shared emotional reactions to the tour. One user wrote, “I grew up only seeing Africa through Western news.

Watching IShowSpeed travel changed everything for me.” Another commented, “This tour made me proud to be African. Every country has its own beauty and culture.”

A third added, “Africa is not what they showed us growing up. This opened my eyes.”

Many diaspora viewers, particularly African Americans and Africans living outside the continent, said the tour helped challenge misconceptions and reduce long-standing tensions and online “diaspora wars.” The warm reception Speed received across the continent highlighted a shared sense of unity, culture, and mutual respect.

In each country he visited, Speed was welcomed with enthusiasm and hospitality. He received handmade artworks and paintings created in his likeness, participated in local traditions, and engaged directly with communities, experiences that resonated strongly with viewers.

During his stop in Liberia, Speed explored several cultural and historical sites, including Providence Island, a historically significant location where formerly enslaved Black Americans first landed after being resettled by the American Colonization Society. The site holds deep meaning in Liberian and African American history.

While in Liberia, Speed was warmly received by cultural and dance troupes, where he learned and performed Liberian traditional dances alongside local performers. He was also taught how to weave Liberian country cloth and shown how dumboy (fufu) is prepared from boiled cassava and traditionally swallowed with pepper soup.

In a moment that sparked widespread online discussion, Speed also met members of the Watkins family, represented by Grebo elders from Maryland County, Liberia. The elders shared claims of ancestral ties to Ohio, Speed’s birthplace, connecting his real name, Darren Jason Watkins Jr., to a shared historical lineage.

Moreover, during his meeting with the Grebo elders, Speed was given a traditional name. The elders bestowed upon him the name “Dweh.” It is a traditional name from Liberian culture, particularly common among the Grebo and Kru, ethnic groups. Translated into English as “Elephant,” the name symbolizes strength, resilience, power, and leadership. It represents a commanding presence and is traditionally given as a sign of respect, honor, and acceptance into the community.

Born on January 21, 2005, IShowSpeed rose to prominence through gaming content, particularly FIFA and horror games, before expanding into IRL streaming. During the Africa tour, he celebrated his 21st birthday in Nigeria and reached a major milestone the same day, surpassing 50 million subscribers on YouTube.

After leaving Liberia, Speed continued his journey through Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. In Ghana, the country’s foreign minister publicly announced plans to grant Speed Ghanaian citizenship, a gesture that further underscored the impact of his visit and cultural engagement.

The tour concluded in Namibia, where Speed reflected on the experience during his final livestream, saying, “I’m so glad I came to Africa. I love Africa, and this tour changed my life for the better.”

As clips from the tour continue to circulate online, many viewers and cultural commentators say IShowSpeed’s Africa journey has become more than entertainment; it has emerged as a powerful cultural moment, reshaping narratives, strengthening unity, and allowing Africa to be seen through a lens of authenticity and pride.
