At about 2.15pm, April 7, 2022, the Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris announced at the Senate that “with 53-47 votes the nomination (Ketanji Brown Jackson) is confirmed”, with Ketanji Brown Jackson thereby making history as the first African American woman to be appointed to the United States Supreme Court.
Vice President said the information will be conveyed to President Joe Biden for further action.
According to reports also monitored on Yahoo News, “Just before the 53-47 bipartisan vote, during the rare occasion when senators announce their votes standing at their desks, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called it “an even greater moment for America as we rise to a more perfect union.”
Spectators packing the Senate gallery erupted in applause and many of the senators rose in a standing ovation.
Jackson is not expected to be fully sworn in for duty until summer, once retiring Justice Stephen Breyer steps down.
