By Demba Ndiath

In a momentous and historic celebration, the Senegalese Association of Columbus Ohio (ASECO) proudly raised the Senegalese flag for the first time at the Ohio Statehouse on Friday, April 4th, 2025 to mark the 65th Independence Day of Senegal. The event also marked a significant milestone for the Senegalese community, honoring their contributions to Ohio’s rich cultural tapestry and showcasing their unity, pride, and heritage.

This inaugural ceremony brought together leaders and representatives from across the African diaspora. Distinguished guests included:

● Cynthia Engmann, President of the Ohio Ghana Council and Member/Recorder of the Ohio New African Immigrants Commission

● Comfort Cole-Kenneh, Former President of Liberians in Columbus Inc. and Vice-Chair of the Ohio New African Immigrants Commission

● Manika Williams, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Ohio National Guard

Representatives from the Ghanaian and Liberian communities, as well as the Ohio National Guard, were also present, demonstrating a strong spirit of Pan-African solidarity and support for the Senegalese community.

The event included a formal program at the Ohio Statehouse, where the President of ASECO delivered a heartfelt speech emphasizing the importance of visibility, civic engagement, and community empowerment for African immigrants in Ohio.

The celebrations will continue with a gift and toy giveawayhosted at Masjid Cheikh Oumar Foutiwou Tall, located at 4500 Eastland Dr, Columbus, OH 43232, symbolizing the community’s ongoing commitment to service and support for families.

This historic flag-raising is not only a celebration of Senegalese identity but also a powerful reminder of the growing presence and impact of African immigrant communities across Ohio.

ASECO looks forward to continuing its work of advocacy, cultural preservation, and community building.
