Franklin County Board of Elections Encourages Voter Registration as Nation Marks America’s 250th Birthday

As the United States prepares to commemorate America’s Semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding—the Franklin County Board of Elections, Ohio has urged eligible residents to honor this historic milestone by registering to vote and participating in elections.

The Semiquincentennial celebration coincides with the birthday of Benjamin Franklin, born January 17, 1706. A Founding Father and lifelong advocate for civic responsibility, Franklin believed that self-government depends upon the active participation of informed citizens.

“Our county bears his last name to honor Mr. Franklin’s dedication and service to this country,” said Franklin County Board of Elections in a statement.

“For 250 years, our democracy has endured because citizens have taken seriously their responsibility to vote,” said Antone White, Director, Franklin County Board of Elections.

“As we reflect on our nation’s history, we encourage Franklin County residents to take part in this enduring tradition.”

Registering to vote is the first step in ensuring every eligible citizen has a voice in local, state, and national elections. Voting—whether early in-person, by mail, or in-person on Election Day—connects today’s voters to generations of Americans who shaped our republic through civic engagement.

As communities across Franklin County and Ohio prepare to recognize America’s 250th birthday, the Franklin County Board of Elections emphasizes that participation in elections remains one of the most meaningful ways to honor the nation’s founding principles.

“The Semiquincentennial is not only a celebration of our past,” said David Payne, Deputy Director, Franklin County Board of Elections. “It is a reminder that the future of our country—and our community—is determined by citizens who choose to register, stay informed, and vote.”

Franklin County residents are encouraged to check their voter registration status, update their information if needed, and plan to vote in the next scheduled election which is Tuesday, May 5, 2026. New voters and registered voters needing to update their registration must do so by 9:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2026.
