Ashton Williamson: Path to Professional Achievement

Ashton Williamson has always shown potential, excelling in his high school job training program and participating in a Summer Youth Work Experience program with Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD). With support from OOD and a transition program through Toledo Public Schools (TPS), Ashton gained valuable work skills while receiving personalized assistance. He graduated from Rogers High School in 2023.

Despite hurdles, including several job interviews without securing an offer for several months, Ashton persevered. Supported by his family, the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities, and Sarah Trimmer, Job Developer at Harbor (a vocational rehabilitation provider), Ashton decided to reconnect with Anishsu Parr, Training Coordinator, and Paige Michalski, Job Coach, both with TPS, for potential job leads.

This decision proved instrumental as it led to a job offer at St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo, where Ashton had previously completed his job training. Michelle Holek, Harbor Job Coach, served as a supportive guide to Ashton, empowering him to work independently and be successful. This opportunity has allowed Ashton to utilize his skills fully and thrive. He is employed full-time at the hospital with benefits.

“I am so proud of what Ashton has accomplished. The people at OOD have been wonderful,” shared Andrea Williamson, Ashton’s mom.

Ariel Scaccia, OOD Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, highlighted Ashton’s journey as a testament to the power of determination and a dedicated support team.

“It feels great—it helped me a lot,” Ashton said.
