Amy Acton (Democrat), physician, public health leader, and former director of the Ohio Department of Health, has made history by becoming the first woman elected governor of Ohio. She defeated Vivek Ramaswamy (Republican) by 50.7% to 46.0%.
Her victory marks a significant milestone in the state’s political history and opens a new chapter in leadership for the Buckeye State.
Born and raised in Youngstown, Acton overcame a childhood marked by poverty, instability, and abuse. She worked her way through college and medical school, earning degrees from Youngstown State University, Northeast Ohio Medical University, and The Ohio State University. She built a career in pediatrics, preventive medicine, public health, and community philanthropy before entering state government.
Acton became a household name in Ohio during the COVID-19 pandemic while serving as Director of the Ohio Department of Health under Republican Governor Mike DeWine. Her daily briefings and science-based approach earned praise from supporters and criticism from opponents, making her one of the most recognized public figures in Ohio during 2020. She resigned in June 2020 and later returned to nonprofit and community leadership work.
Her gubernatorial campaign focused heavily on affordability, healthcare costs, education, economic opportunity, government accountability, and support for working families. Acton presented herself as a problem-solver who could bridge political divides while bringing a public health perspective to state leadership.
Political observers noted that her election represented not only a partisan shift but also a breakthrough for women in Ohio politics. Her victory adds Ohio to the list of states that have elected female governors and signals changing political dynamics in a state long dominated by male executive leadership.
