Liberians in Columbus, Inc. (LICI) has officially kicked off its celebrations marking Liberia’s 179th Independence Day, beginning with a weekend filled with culture, entertainment, and community service.
The celebrations opened on Saturday, July 18, as LICI partnered with the United African Festival, bringing together African communities from across Columbus for a dynamic pre-Independence celebration. While Liberia officially celebrates its Independence Day on July 26, the festival is a cherished tradition that allows Liberians to celebrate alongside other African communities ahead of the national holiday.
One of the highlights of the festival was the show of solidarity from other African communities, who joined Liberians in celebrating Liberia’s rich history, culture, and heritage.
Moreover, the excitement reached its peak when Liberian legendary artist, Lucky Shango took the stage to close out Saturday’s festivities. His performance had Liberians on their feet and on the dance floor, proudly celebrating their culture and Independence.
The celebration continued on Sunday, July 19, with another milestone as LICI officially launched its Free Community Store at its community center on Kimberly Parkway in Columbus.
The store provides free food, clothing, household essentials, diapers, baby supplies, and other necessities to individuals and families in need, regardless of background. Community members can also support the initiative by donating food, clothing, household items, baby supplies, or making monetary contributions to help keep the shelves stocked.
As the weeklong celebration continues, LICI has several signature events planned, including its Annual Liberian Flag Raising Ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse on Friday, July 24, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Additionally, the organization will also host its 179th Independence Day Gala Dinner & Fundraiser on Saturday, July 25, at The Ave Space Event Center, featuring cultural performances, awards and recognition, entertainment, and the Queen Contest, celebrating Liberian women in the community.
The festivities will conclude on Sunday, July 26, with a Community Thanksgiving Service at the LICI Community Center, bringing the weeklong celebration to a close with worship and gratitude as Liberia marks its 179th Independence Day.
For nearly four decades, LICI has served as a pillar of support for Liberians in Central Ohio, promoting cultural preservation, community development, and strengthening relationships with the broader Columbus community.
