By Irina Perry

City of Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther joined community leaders, elected officials, business owners, and residents in Northland Tuesday, July 7, 2026, to launch the next phase of its Clean and Safe Corridor Initiative along the Route 161 corridor.

The initiative is designed to improve public safety, enhance neighborhood appearance, support local businesses, and strengthen one of the city’s most diverse commercial districts.

While addressing the gathering, Andrew J. Ginther emphasized the city’s continued investment in creating cleaner, safer, and more welcoming neighborhoods.

“The effort reflects a collaborative approach that brings together city departments, local organizations, businesses, and residents to address beautification, maintenance, safety, and economic development along the busy Route 161 corridor,” said Mayor Ginther.

Also, Councilmember Emmanuel Remy spoke about the importance of investing in neighborhoods where families live, work, and operate businesses, adding that “the initiative is expected to improve the overall quality of life while encouraging continued economic growth throughout the Northland community.”

Community partners at the event included Lynnise Smith, Executive Director of Elevate Northland; Felix Quachey, owner of American Family Insurance; Alice Foeller, Interim Chair of the 161 Task Force; and Pastor Kofi Adjei of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They all spoke about the value of collaboration in creating a vibrant corridor that serves residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

Northland is one of Columbus’ most culturally diverse communities and is home to families representing many nations and backgrounds.

Investments such as the Clean and Safe Corridor Initiative is expected to demonstrate the city’s commitment to fostering economic opportunity while creating attractive public spaces where businesses can thrive and residents feel safe.

It is believed that the initiative will strengthen community pride, encourage new investment, and support the long-term success of Northland as an important gateway to Columbus.
