From Central Ohio to the World: The Legacy of the Klassic Kup Championships

By Irina Perry

In every city, there are events. Some are memorable. A select few become traditions. And only the rarest become legacies.

For the past 50 years, Grandmaster Robert L. Perry has dedicated his life to martial arts, leadership, youth development, and community service. This year marks a historic milestone as he celebrates five decades in the martial arts and hosts the 15th Annual Klassic Kup Championships & Legend Awards, one of Ohio’s most respected martial arts events.

What began as a vision rooted in discipline, respect, and personal growth has evolved into a powerful platform that extends far beyond competition. The Klassic Kup Championships & Legend Awards has become a place where young people discover confidence, families gather in support of positive values, and martial arts legends are honored for their lifelong contributions to the community and the sport.

Each year, athletes, instructors, families, and supporters come together to celebrate excellence while building meaningful connections that transcend age, culture, and background. The event serves as a reminder that martial arts is not simply about earning trophies, it is about developing character, leadership, perseverance, and respect.

This year’s championship marks another historic chapter with the participation of Family Taekwondo Academy of Accra, Ghana, representing Team Ghana. Their presence reflects the growing international reach of the Klassic Kup and demonstrates how sports can serve as a bridge between nations, bringing people together through shared values and mutual respect.

International participation highlights the event’s growing role in cultural exchange and global friendship. Through martial arts, students from different countries and backgrounds learn from one another while celebrating diversity and unity.

The impact of Grandmaster Perry’s leadership extends well beyond the tournament floor. In recognition of his decades of service, he was honored as the recipient of the 2025 George E. Stebout Juneteenth Legacy Award for his contributions to the Reynoldsburg community in the areas of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Throughout his career, Grandmaster Perry has used martial arts as a vehicle to empower youth, strengthen families, and create opportunities for personal and professional growth. His commitment to service has touched countless lives across Central Ohio and beyond.

For 50 years, martial arts have been the vehicle. Service has been the mission. Community has been the purpose.

Today, the Klassic Kup Championships & Legend Awards proudly represents the values that strengthen communities and inspire future generations: excellence, diversity, inclusion, leadership, education, service, and opportunity.

As the tournament continues to grow, so does its impact—connecting communities locally and globally while preserving a legacy built on dedication, integrity, and vision.

Building Champions. Honoring Legends. Connecting Communities Worldwide.
