Bhuwan Pyakurel Becomes President of Reynoldsburg City Council

Bhuwan Pyakurel, who made history five years ago as the first Bhutanese Nepali American to be elected into office in America has again made history by becoming President of the Reynoldsburg City Council, Ohio.

Witnessed by families, friends, community leaders and city officials, Bhuwan was sworn in by the Reynoldsburg Mayor Joe Begeny.

“Thank you, Reynoldsburg, for this incredible opportunity to serve as President of the Council,” said Bhuwan Pyakurel.

“I am deeply grateful to this city, this community, and to this country. Thank you, America.”

Bhuwan welcomed “all residents of our city, let’s work together with respect, unity, and purpose to make Reynoldsburg an even better place for everyone. We are always stronger and better together.”

Bhuwan Pyakurel lived in a refugee camp with his family for 18 years before being resettled by Global Refuge. He was elected to the city council of Reynoldsburg, Ohio in 2020—the first-ever Bhutanese-Nepali to be elected to office in the United States.
