Columbus City Council Ushers in New Year with a 9-member structure

Posted by: New Americans Magazine , January 2, 2024

With approval by voters in 2018, Columbus City Council on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, seated nine members, each representing at-large districts thereby implementing the biggest changes to the structure of the body in 100 years. This means that Council grew from seven members to nine, three of which are first-time councilmembers: Chris Wyce, Nancy Day-Achauer, Melissa Green.

Returning council members include Council President Shannon G. Hardin, Council President Pro Tempore Rob Dorans, Emmanuel V. Remy, Nick Bankston, Lourdes Barroso de Padilla and Shayla Favor.

Interestingly, Council members drew lots to establish staggered terms of service: Five councilmembers will serve a 4-year term, and four councilmembers will serve a 2-year term, running again in 2025

Also, members unanimously re-elected Shannon Hardin as Council President and Rob Dorans as President Pro Tem and reappointed Andrea Blevins as City Clerk and Deborah Klie as City Treasurer.

The council established its committee structure for the year 2024-2025, adopting a restructured committee system.

New Committees and District Operation

The council redesigned the committee’s structure “to better align with priorities” with the council’s 21-committee structure condensed to 11 committees based on areas of focus. These committees are vital to the new hybrid at-large districting system because residents have a Council representative who is living in their neighborhood. However, they can still access all Councilmembers regarding issues specific to their committees.
