Ohio Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Create Statewide Youth Council
By Danlette G. Washington
Ohio State Senator, Willis E. Blackshear Jr. has announced the introduction of Senate Bill 333, legislation that would establish the Ohio Statewide Youth Council.
The proposed bill would create a council made up of high school students from across the state to advise the Governor and members of the Ohio General Assembly on key issues impacting young people. If approved, the council would serve as a formal advisory body, giving students a direct voice in shaping policies that affect their education, mental health, workforce opportunities, and overall well-being.
Blackshear said the legislation is designed to ensure that youth perspectives are reflected in state policy decisions. He emphasized that engaging young people in government discussions can help lawmakers better understand the real-life challenges students face and craft solutions that produce positive outcomes.
Under SB 333, student representatives from various regions of Ohio would be selected to participate on the council. Members would meet to discuss pressing concerns affecting youth and provide recommendations to state leaders in Columbus.
The proposal has already generated positive feedback from members of the public. Supporters described the measure as “a fantastic opportunity,” with one commenter calling it “an amazing idea and bill” that would give bright young minds a meaningful avenue to grow and succeed.
Moreover, others applauded the effort, saying youth should assist in decisions that directly affect their population, while additional supporters offered congratulations and encouragement for advancing the initiative.
The bill will now move through the legislative process, including committee review and debate, before potentially heading to a full vote. If passed and signed into law, the Ohio Statewide Youth Council would become an official statewide advisory group representing high school students across Ohio.
