City of Columbus Honors Dr. King’s Legacy at 2026 MLK Day

The City of Columbus commemorated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during its annual MLK Day March on Monday, January 19, 2026, at the historic Lincoln Theatre, Columbus, Ohio.
The program brought together community leaders, elected officials, educators, advocates, artists, and residents from across Central Ohio in a collective reflection on Dr. King’s enduring message of justice, equality, and unity. 
The program featured a distinguished lineup of guest speakers representing education, civil rights, community leadership, and social services.
Dr. Elaine Richardson, Professor at The Ohio State University, delivered remarks rooted in education, cultural awareness, and empowerment, highlighting the critical role of storytelling and scholarship in shaping equitable futures.
Karen Hewitt, Founder of K. Hewitt Consulting, spoke passionately on advocacy and LGBTQ+ rights, emphasizing inclusion, visibility, and the ongoing work required to ensure equity for marginalized communities.
Carlos Rivera Fernández, business owner and respected community leader, addressed the importance of immigration, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement, sharing insights on how immigrant voices strengthen Columbus’s social and economic fabric.
Shannon T. L. Isom, representing the Community Shelter Board, spoke on issues of poverty and housing insecurity, calling attention to the collective responsibility to uplift individuals and families experiencing hardship.
Music and movement played a powerful role in the program. The Central State University Chorus delivered moving musical selections that honored tradition and inspired reflection, filling the Lincoln Theatre with voices of hope and resilience.
A dynamic dance presentation by Dance E.L.E.T.E. Performance Academy captivated the audience, using expressive movement to reflect themes of perseverance, faith, and community strength.
A deeply moving MLK Honors Segment paid tribute to three remarkable individuals whose lives embodied service and leadership:
- Samuel Gresham Jr. (1949–2025)
- Ann B. Walker (1923–2025)
- Les Wright (1938–2025)
Their lasting contributions to the Columbus community were remembered with gratitude and reverence, reminding attendees that Dr. King’s legacy lives on through those who dedicate their lives to the service of others.
