Ohio Celebrates Life of Master Sergeant Tyler H. Simmons

By Irina Perry

The city of Columbus, Ohio on Friday, April 10, 2026, gathered in unity, strength, and remembrance to honor the life of Master Sergeant Tyler Hanani Simmons who lost his life in Iran.

Held at the First Church of God on Refugee Road, the celebration of life became more than a farewell—it became a powerful reflection of love, faith, and the enduring impact of a young man gone too soon.

Led by Senior Pastor Bishop Timothy J. Clarke and officiated by Rev. Dr. John S. Little, the sanctuary was filled with family, friends, military leaders, and community members.

Among them were Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and First Lady Fran DeWine, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther, and City Council President Shannon Hardin—each standing in solidarity with the Simmons family.

The ceremony opened with a moving processional led by respected clergy, followed by scripture readings from Psalm 23, Joshua 1:9, John 14:1–6, and II Timothy 4:7—verses that spoke of courage, faith, and perseverance.

Music filled the sanctuary with deep emotion. Selections such as “I Shall Wear a Crown” and “Total Praise” created a sacred atmosphere, reminding all in attendance of hope beyond grief.

Heartfelt reflections were shared by loved ones, childhood friends, and fellow service members. Military leaders spoke with reverence of Simmons’ dedication, discipline, and commitment to his country. A special tribute, including a video message from gospel artist Fred Hammond, reflected the wide reach of Tyler’s life and influence.

“Our Tyler, Our Hero”

One of the most touching moments came through a poem titled “Our Tyler, Our Hero,” a tribute that captured the heart of the service and the depth of love felt by those he leaves behind.

Gone too soon, yet never gone,
Your light in us still carries on.
Through quiet skies and whispered air,
We feel your presence everywhere.

The poem continued, reflecting his courage and sacrifice:

You answered duty’s solemn call,
With courage strong, you gave your all.
Above the clouds, your spirit flies,
A guardian now in endless skies.

And in its closing words, it offered comfort and eternal connection:

Though grief may linger, love remains,
A bond no distance ever chains.
For in our hearts, you’ll always stay—
Our guiding light, our brighter day.

These words resonated deeply throughout the sanctuary, bringing both tears and healing to those gathered.
