Sports: USA Men’s Hockey Team Wins Gold in Winter Olympics
By Okon Ekpenyong
And no, most of us young folks weren’t alive in 1980. But we all know the legend: The Miracle on Ice. A bunch of college kids beat the unbeatable Soviets, and America has been telling that story like gospel ever since.
Well… 46 years later, the youth now have their miracle — except this time, no miracle was necessary. Just pure skill, nerves of steel, and a goalie who decided, “Not today, Canada.”
“The US Hockey brotherhood is strong, and I’m proud to be American today. When asked by an NBC reporter about the team’s victory, Jack Hughes, who scored the game-winning goal in overtime, praised Hellebuyck as the team’s best player. It was an unbelievable, gutsy win that showcased American hockey. We played a great Canadian team, but today was all for the country.”
The 2026 gold medal showdown between the US and Canada was so intense that even people who don’t watch hockey were suddenly experts in icing, forechecking, and “why is that man skating so fast?”
The game went to overtime — because of course it did — and then Jack Hughes blasted home the golden goal, assisted by Zach Werenski, the pride of Columbus. ESPN
Fans Were Losing Their Minds, and one American fan said: “First time in my life USA has won gold… Canada might have been the better team, but Hellebuyck was the better goalie — and that’s what matters.”
And then the internet exploded when Team USA held up Johnny Gaudreau’s jersey after the win, honoring the late star who died along with his brother at the hands of a drunk driver, per Yahoo Sports. One fan added, “The Gaudreau jersey and the kids in the team photo sent me over the edge.”
Brazil Plays Egypt in Cleveland on June 6
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America only months away and the world’s eyes turning toward the United States, a special celebration is already underway: the Road to 26 USA series, a nationwide tour bringing some of the world’s biggest national teams to American stadiums. For immigrant families across the country, this is a rare chance to see global football giants play live—and one of the most exciting matches is happening right here in Ohio.
Road to 26 is a new U.S.-based international match series created to bring the world’s top national teams to American fans ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Co-promoted by Florida Citrus Sports, Unified Events, Pitch International, and Lions Sports & Media, the series connects global supporters to the beautiful game while giving American cities a taste of World Cup energy.
The top players from Egypt, Brazil, France, Colombia, and Croatia are like the Avengers of international football, but with more prayer and less insurance: Egypt features Mohamed Salah, who runs as if he’s late for crossing the Red Sea; Brazil offers Vinícius Jr. and Rodrygo, dribbling so disrespectful that defenders question their calling; France sends Mbappé and Griezmann, who seem divine in their play; Colombia brings Luis Díaz, moving with the fire of the Holy Ghost; and Croatia presents Luka Modrić, the timeless midfield prophet who envisions passes before they appear. Even if you don’t recognize their names now, you’re about to witness players whose footwork could be straight out of the Book of Psalms.
