NABF Unveils Essay & Short Story Competition for K-12 Students

The New Americans Book Fair, NABF has unveiled essay, short story and drawing competition for K-12 students at the 2025 book festival holding at the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Karl Road branch on Saturday, September 20th beginning from 10am to 5pm.

With submission date set at Friday, September 12, 2025 participants are allowed to submit entries in all categories.

“The past New Americans Book Fair editions have produced potential writers resulting in the decision of the organizers to introduce the writing and drawing competition to encourage early development in creative writing by these youths,” said Deba Uwadiae, Executive Director, New Americans Book Fair.

“Submitted works of all participants would be published in the New Americans magazine and into a book. Therefore, at early age, these young creative writers will become accomplished published authors.”

Details below:

Short Story

Participants can enter any short story/drama/poem in this category. It must not exceed two pages.

Essay

All entries must not exceed two pages.

  • Elementary School: What is your favorite book or author and why?
  • Middle School: If you were to write a book, what would it be about and why?
  • High School: There are so many untold stories that need to be told. What story do you think needs to be told and why?

Drawings

  • Participants can enter any drawing in whatever form or color in this category.

Entries

  • All entries must be original works of the authors
  • All entries must have the title, name, grade, school or address of the authors
  • All entries will be published by the New Americans magazine
  • Winners will be announced at the Book Fair on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 2pm
  • Prizes and certificates will be presented at the Book Fair to the first three winners in each category
  • Winners will be featured on Special Radio Show on Apex1Radio during post-book festival evaluation program
  • All participants will receive certificates of participation
  • Any participant can enter all three competitions if interested

Submit online, by post or at the Karl Road Library on or before Friday, September 12, 2025.
