Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) has expressed support for the Ohio Business Enterprise (BE) Program for playing a crucial role in empowering Ohioans who are legally blind to pursue entrepreneurial careers in food service management.
The Ohio Business Enterprise (BE) Program, which recently hosted its Statewide Conference at the Deer Creek Lodge & Conference Center on May 2-3, 2025, brought together BE Operators, new Licensees, OOD staff, and other guests, all eager to focus on the latest technology and customer service innovations within the program.
The BE Program plays a crucial role in empowering Ohioans who are legally blind to pursue entrepreneurial careers in food service management. Participants are trained and licensed to manage a variety of establishments, including cafeterias, micro-markets, convenience stores, snack bars, and vending operations in state and federal buildings.
Under the Randolph-Sheppard Act and Ohio Revised Code, licensed Operators enjoy priority access to managing businesses at interstate highway rest areas and other government venues, including state colleges and universities. OOD is committed to providing ongoing support, technical assistance, and training to ensure their success.
“Many of our Operators look forward to our annual statewide meeting as it offers an invaluable opportunity to learn from one another and reconnect with old friends,” said Annette Lutz, BE Operator and Ohio Vendors Representative Committee Chair.
“This year was particularly special as it marked our first conference at one of Ohio’s scenic state parks, a tradition we hope to carry on for years to come. We had the chance to engage with national updates and network to enhance our businesses. The awards ceremony also allowed us to recognize and honor several Operators for their dedicated service to the program and their commitment to our customers.”
During the awards ceremony, 27 BE Operators received certificates celebrating their milestones and years of service within the program. Additionally, the group welcomed and recognized one new BE Licensee.
The keynote speaker, Michael Talley, an Operator from Alabama, inspired attendees with his presentation on “Stepping Up” — emphasizing the importance of being proactive in business management and prioritizing customer satisfaction.
The conference also featured contributions from Debi Schwartz with Get SSA Help and Rick Pam with Ensight, enhancing the resources available to attendees.
